Introduction:
Many of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions were dependant on art-collectors to buy their work and in this way receiving recognition and income. With some collectors the Impressionists had befriended relationships, some were important benefactors. The most important art-collectors for the impressionists you’ll find here. And also all those that lent works for the ‘impressionist’ expositions. The empasize is on those that collected art-works of the ‘impressionists’ before 1900. They will be rendered in an alphabetical order.
Some partakers also owned each others works.
Some even had large collections like Caillebotte and Rouart.

Cuban doctor; amateur painter; friend of Dr. Gachet↓.
Portrayed by Guillaumin (5IE-1880-71), a work he also did loan. (R90II,p285)

Alexis, Paul (1847-1901):
Art-critic. Journalis, dramatist, naturalist novelist.
At the 8th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1886 he did loan a painting of Signac (no.198).
Owned at least 2 studies of Seurat, including DR150.

André, Edouard-François (1833-1894):
President of the Union des arts décoratifs; codirector of La Chronique des arts et de la curiosité; art-collector.
Did loan 8IE-1886-232 of Vignon. (R90II,p285)

Angelo:
Did loan a fan made by Forain (4IE-1879-104). (R90II,p285)

Appert, Léon:
Glassblower. Brother-in-law of Seurat of which he did loan 1 painting (8IE-1886-180). (R90II,p285)

Arosa, Achille (1827-?):
Son of François-Victor Arosa who was born 1787 in Madrid and brother of Gustave↓. Lived 44, Rue de Bassano.
At the 1875/03/24 auction he bought no. 4 of Monet and no.59 of Sisley.
The collection of Achille was sold in 1891/05/06*. It included works of Boudin, Corot, Daubigny, Fromentin, Harpignies, Jongkind (2x), Lépine, Pissarro** and Sisley (La Seine à Bougival).
Note*: At Hôtel Drouot; it was called ‘Beaux tableaux modernes, aquarelles et dessins, bronzed de Barye et Rosa Bonheur composant la collection de M. A.A.’
Note**: He owned the four seasons of Pissarro made in 1872 (CCPP238+239+240+241) and 1 other work (CCPP228?).

Arosa, Gustave (1818-83):
His wife invited artists in their appartment in Paris (5, Rue Breda, now Rue Henri-Monnier, 9th arrondissement) and their house in Saint-Cloud (14,Rue du Calvaire). Gauguin saw in his collection works of Corot (several), Courbet (7x), Daumier (4x), Delacroix (17x) and Jongkind (6x) and was inspired. Gustave also owned 3 works of Pissarro*. Gustave helped Gauguin to get a position at the stockbroker Bertin (1, Rue Lafitte). Gauguin learned from Gustave and his daughter Marguerite how to engrave, 1871 onwards. Gustave was befriended with Nadar. Gustave made photo’s of his collection of paintings.
At the 1875/03/24 auction he bought no.61 of Sisley. His collection was sold 1878/02/25** for financial reasons.

Astruc, Zacherie (1835-1907):
Zacharie Astruc, who had only joined the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition, did loan 8IE-1886-74 of Guillaumin.

Art-collector. Did loan a work of Vignon (8IE-1886-234).
Posthumous and anonymous auction of the widow of P.A. (=Paul Aubry) at Georges Petit 1897/05/10. This included:

Baudry, Etienne (1830-1906/1908):
Art-collector, painter, amateur musician, vineyard owner. He was a cousin of Théodore Duret↓.
At the 4th ‘impressionist’ exposition he lent 1 work of Monet (no.138); he had bought this work at the Hoschedé sale 1874/01/13↓ at Hôtel Drouot. 1873/04/20 he bought CCP258 from Pissarro, which later was part of the 1892/04/13 sale as no.47 at Hôtel Drouot.

Bazille, Frédéric (-1870):
Frédéric Bazille, was a friend of namely Monet, Renoir and Sisley and an important benefactor for them.
He once owned the following works:

Berard, Paul (1833-1905):
Paul Bérard was namely a benefactor of Renoir , whom he introduced to his friends Grimpel, Clapisson and Cahen d’Anvers.
In 1881 Bérard lent a gouache of Pissarro to the 6th ‘impressionist’ exposition (no.79).

Berend, Ed.:
M. Ed. Berend did loan 2 works at the 8th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1886, no.7 of Cassatt and no.75 of Guillaumin. (R90II,p286)
Desboutin portrayed father Bérend, a banker and (probably) his son Edward and his daughter Daisy, all around 1879.

Bernier, Albert:

Art-dealer.

Brandon, Edouard (1831-97):
Brandon was partaker of the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874. For this exposition he also did loan 3 works of Degas (no.55+57+61).
He gathered a small collection, which was posthumously auctioned at Hôtel Drouot. (R90II,p286)

Novelist and Poet.

Brulé:

Brullé:
M. Brullé did loan 1 work of Lépine in 1874 (1IE-1874-82).

Cahuzac, Louis-Sébastien-Henry de (1825-89):
De Cahuzac was marquis de Caux and equerry to Napoléon III.
In 1882 he lent two works of Monet (no.57+91) to the 7th ‘impressionist’ exposition. (R90II,p287)

Caillebotte, Gustave (1848-94):
Caillebotte was partaker of 5 ‘impressionist’ expositions. He also was an important supporter of the other Impressionists and collector of their art-works. He lent several works for the ‘impressionist’ expositions:
in 1877: 3 works of Degas (no.37+45+47), 1 of Monet (no.115), 2 of Pissarro (no.180+181) and 1 of Renoir (no.185);
in 1879: 2 of Monet (no.143+144), 8 of Pissarro (no.181-186+192);

Chabrier was composer.
In 1879 he lent 1 work of Monet (no.153) for the 4th ‘impressionist’ exposition.
Chabrier was portrayed 2x by Edouard Manet around 1880/81.
The posthumous sale of his collection was at Hôtel Drouot 1896/03/26.

Lawyer; art-collector.

He was portrayed by Desboutin in 1890.

Chocquet, Victor (1821-1891):
In 1876 Chocquet did loan 8 paintings to the 2nd ‘impressionist’ exposition.
His collection was auctioned 1899/07/01+03+04 at Georges Petit.

Clapisson, Léon-Marie (1837-94):
Clapisson was a stock-brocker and art-collector.
In 1881 he lent 1 work of Pissarro (no.74) to the 6th ‘impressionist’ exposition.
Renoir portrayed his wife and showed it at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in 1883. (R90II,p287)

Claretie, Jules (1840-1913):
Born as Arsène-Arnaud Claretie. He was a novelist, play writer and journalist.
As an art-critic he also reviewed the ‘impressionist’ expositions.
He lent 2 works of Raffaëlli to the ‘impressionist’ expositions: in 1880 (no.172) and in 1881 (no.115)↓.
Desboutin portrayed him 3x between 1878 and 1886.

Coquelin, Benoir-Constant (1841-1909):
Also called Coquelin Aîné. He was the brother of Coquelin Cadet.
He was an actor, lecturer and writer.
At the 4th ‘impressionist’ exposition of 1879 he lent 1 work of Forain (no.99). (R90II,p287)

Coquelin, Ernest (1848-1909):
Mostly called Coquelin Cadet.
Actor at the Odéon and the Comédie française.
In 1879 he did loan 1 work of Degas (4IE-1879-64) and 1 of Forain (4IE-1879-100).
He was portrayed by Astruc, Degas and Desboutin.

Daudet, Alphonse (1840-97):
Writer; helped lauch La Vie Moderne.

Desboutin did portray him in 1878.

Daugresne, Eugène:
Lived in Paris. Cousin of the mother of Gustave Caillebotte, who did portray him in 1878. He once owned at least 10 paintings of Caillebotte. He died around 1896 and afterwards (many) paintings became the proprety of Martial Caillebotte. (R102,no109).

Degas, Edgar (1834-1917):
Degas was partaker of 7 of the 8 ‘impressionist’ expositions. Did collect several works of the partakers and other artists.
Did loan 1 work of Gauguin in 1881 (6IE-1881-34).
He once owned the following works:

Depeaux, Félix-François (1853-1920):
Depeaux was a coal tycoon.
In the 1880s Lebourg and Sisley lunched together with him at his home in Rouen (R88I,p428). Depeaux had several contacts with Pissarro and Sisley (R116I,p432;R116,p297).
Depeaux was an important collector of art. He never did loan to the ‘impressionist’ expositions (R90II,p288).
He collected more than 600 art-works, including of 55 Sisley, 30 of Lebourg, 20 of Monet and also works of Renoir and Pissarro.
In total he owned 13 paintings of Pissarro (R116III,p940).
In 1909 he made an important donation to the Rouen museum, including 30 pictures of Lebourg (M12;R88;iR23).
There had been sales of his collection in 1901, in 1906 and in 1921.

Doucet, Jacques (1853-1929):
Couturier; art-collector.
Did loan 1 work of Forain in 1879 (4IE-1879-87), and in 1880 he did loan 2 works: 1 fan of Pissarro (5IE-1880-138↓) and 1 aquarelle of Raffaëlli (5IE-1880-152). (R90II,p288)

Dreyfus:
M. Dreyfus did loan 1 gouache of Pissarro in 1881 (6IE-1881-76).
Maybe this was Lucien Dreyfus, lender of Effet de neige of Pissarro to the Exposition Universelle in 1900.
Or maybe Mose Dreyfus, portrayed by Cassatt (4IE-1879-53). (R90II,p288)

Duez, Ernest-Ange (1843-96):
Portrait, genre and landscape painter.
Did loan 1 painting of Monet in 1879 (4IE-1879-147↓). (R90II,p288)

Durand, Mme:
Mme Durand did loan 1 work of Raffaëlli in 1880 (5IE-1880-145). (R90II,p288)

Durand-Ruel, Paul (1831-1922):
Art-dealer and important supporter of the Impressionists. He did loan (according to the catalogues) in total 8 art-works to the ‘impressionist’ expositions. The 7th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1882 was co-organised by Durand-Ruel and probably many works from his gallery were shown.

Duranty, Louis-Emile-Edmond (1833-1880):
Duranty was an art-critic and also an art-collector.
He did loan 1 work of Raffaëlli in 1880 (5IE-1880-175). (R90II,p288)

Froyez, Jules: 
Lived in Paris. Friend of Gustave Caillebotte, who did portray him in 1881 (R102,no181).

Doctor, homeopath, socialist, painter, printmaker and art-collector. Supported the impressionists and Vincent van Gogh. Large part of his collection is now in the musée d’Orsay (M1). Used as artist name Paul van Ryssel.

Garay, Ayarra de:

Gauguin, Paul:
Paul Gauguin joined 4 of the 8 ‘impressionist’ expositions.
He also has lent some works. In 1879 3 of Pissarro (4IE-1879-178 +179 +189), in 1880 one of Pissarro (5IE-1880-128) and in 1882 1 of Guillaumin (7IE-1882-43) and 1 of Pissarro (7IE-1882-82).

Gauthier, Mlle Gabrielle:
Has lent in 1881 a painting of Raffaëlli (6IE-1881–117).
Maybe she was Mlle Gabrielle Gauthier-Lathuille, daughter of M. Lathuille, owner of the Cabaret du Père Lathuille, 7 avenue de Clichy. A cabaret frequented by Degas and Manet.

Ghez, Dr. Oscar:
Dr. Oscar Ghez did collect many impressionist works. He lived in Geneva. Large part of his collection was in the Petit Palais (Musée d’Art Moderne) in Geneva (=M144). But, this museum has been closed, the collection is divided; see link for a french article on Wikipedia.

Gill, André:
André Gill, was born as André Gosset de Guinnes (1840-1918). A realist painter who exhibited at the Salon from 1875-1882; engraver, caricaturist; friend and student of Daumier.
Has lent in 1876 a work of Léon Ottin (2IE-1876-196).

Gogh, Théo van:
Older brother of the famous post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh.
He was an art-dealer, partner of the Goupil-Boussod-Valadon gallery.
He once owned the following works:

Art-dealer, painter, restorer.
Has lent in 1876 two works of Jean-Baptiste Millet (2IE-1876-139 +143).

Haviland, Charles (1839-1921):
Businessman, son of David Haviland of the renowned porcelain business.
Has lent in 1879 a work of Marie Bracquemond (4IE-1879-1) and in 1886 a work of Cassatt (8IE-1886-12).

Hayem was a wholesaler in Paris.
He did loan the following works at the ‘impressionist’ expositions: in 1879 4IE-1879-158↓ of Monet, in 1881 6IE-1881-104 of Raffaëlli and in 1886 8IE-1886-133+135+138 of Redon. And maybe also a work of Degas (3IE-1877-43). (R90II,p290)

Heilbuth, Ferdinand (1826-89):
German painter, later naturalized as a French citizen. Exhibited at the Salon 1863 onwards.
Has lent in 1880 two works of Jean-François Raffaëlli (5IE-1880-162 +163).
Posthumous auction sale at Georges Petit 1890/05/19+20+21.
This included two works of Raffaëlli: no. 314, Un chiffonnier, on panel, 20×9; and no.315, Un balayeur, on panel, 20×9.

Hennique, Léon (1851-1935):
Naturalist writer.
Has lent in 1879 a drawing of Forain (4IE-1879-107).

Heurtelop, M. le Dr.:
Has lent in 1881 a work of Raffaëlli (6IE-1881-97).

Heymann, Hippolyte (1845-1910):
Bookseller and art-dealer.
Has lent in 1886 a painting of Signac (8IE-1886-192).

Hoschedé, Ernest (1837-1891):
Hoschedé was an early collector and benefactor of the impressionists.
In 1877 Hoschedé did loan 18 paintings to the 3rd impressionist exposition.
There have been at least 3 auctions sales at Hôtel Drouot: 1874/01/13; 1875/04/20 and 1878/06/05+06.

Houssaye, Arsène:
Born as Asrène Housset (1815-96). Writer, director of L’Artiste.
Did review the 4th ‘impressionist’ exposition using the name F.-C. de Syène.
Has lent in 1876 an etch of Lepic (2IE-1876-134).

 

Hugot, Paul (1841-1896):
Lived in Paris, vue du Pré-aux-Clercs. Friend of Caillebotte who did portray him in 1878.
Has lent in 1879 of Caillebotte (4IE-1879-14).

Huysmans, Joris-Karl (1848-1907):
Born as Charles-Marie-Georges Huysmans (1848-1907). Writer; art-critic. Several times reviewed the ‘impressionist’ expositions.
Did loan in 1879 a work of Forain (4IE-1879-95), in 1880 a work of Raffaëlli (5IE-1880-154); in 1886 a work of Redon (8IE-1886-129), a drawing of Seurat (8IE-1886-182*) and a drawing of Signac (8IE-1886-200).
Note*: he also once owned no.181 (R207,p47).

Jouron:
In 1879 a M. Jouron has lent a work of Forain (4IE-1879-93).

Lamonta, H. de:
Has lent in 1881 a work of Raffaëlli (6IE-1881-123).
Maybe this was Henri de Lamonta, who published a political essay in 1872.

Lamy, Mme H.:
Mme H. Lamy has lent in 1879 a work of Forain (4IE-1879-89).

Latouche, Mme:
Louis Latouche joined the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874.
He and his wife were an art-supply dealer and a small art-dealer.
She has lent in 1876 a painting of Sisley (2IE-1876-238).

Lecadre, Paul-Eugène:
Cousin of Monet, living in Le Havre.
Has lent a painting of Monet in 1879 (4IE-1879-155↓).

Maybe this was Ernest Levallois, politician and mayor of Paris.

Martin, Mme:

She probably was the wife of the art-dealer Père Martin↑. They married in 1837.

Marx, Roger:
Roger Marx never lent works to the ‘impressionist’ expositions (R90II,p292).

Ernest May (1845-1925) was a banker and art-collector.

This included 4 works of Degas (4IE-1879-61↓ +65; 5IE-1880-35+40), and 1 of Caillebotte (4IE-1879-28), Forain (4IE-1879-90), Pissarro  (6IE-1881-78↓) and Raffaëlli (5IE-1880-161).

Gaston Menier was an art-collector and died around 1936

Meyer, Alfred (1832-1904):
Alfred Meyer joined the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874.
He has lent in 1881 a watercolour of Forain (6IE-1881-23).

Mitrecey:

Michel-Lévy, Henri:
Henri Michel-Lévy was a portrait and genre painter who died in 1914.
In 1879 he has lent a work of Degas (4IE-1879-69).

Mühlbacher, Gustave (1824-1907):
Parisian coachmaker and art-collector.
Has lent in 1874 a drawing of Degas (1IE-1874-60).

Murat, Georges:
Has lent in 1881 a work of Vignon (5IE-1881-224).
Note: there was a M. Murat who bought 2CR478 of Caillebotte at the retrospective in 1894 (R102,no478).

Murer, Eugène (1841-1906):
Born as Hyacinthe Eugène Meunier. Art collector, writer and later also a painter. Guillaumin was his youth friend. Early supporter (and also beneficiary) of the impressionists. In 1879 he did lend 7 works to the 4th ‘impressionist’ exhibition;
According to Wildenstein there was July 1884 an exhibition of the collection of Murer in his Hôtel du Dauphin et de l’Espagne called “Magnifique collection d’impressionnistes”. But, probably this was held 1896/05/15 onwards.

Nunès:
A. Nunès, who died before 1894, was a cousin of Camille Pissarro. He was an art-dealer.
He has lent in 1886 one work of Cassatt (8IE-1886-13) and one pastel of Guillaumin (8IE-1886-79).

Natanson, Thadée (1868-1951):
Born in Warsaw, Poland. Important collector of impressionist art.
He never lent works to the ‘impressionist’ expositions (R90II,p293).
Acquainted with Gauguin, Monet, Pissarro, Redon, Renoir, Signac and Rodin.
1896/06/15: published an article on Renoir.
Is often portrayed. Part of his collection is now in Musée National d’Art Moderne (R3,p685;R31)

Oppenheim:
In 1881 a M. Oppenheim has lent a work of Raffaëlli (6IE-1881-108).
Maybe a descendant or relative of Simon Oppenheim (1803-80) or Abraham Oppenheim (1804-78).

Parard:
A M. Parard did loan in 1880 a work of Guillaumin (5IE-1880-76) (R90II,p293)

Perrinet:
A M. Perrinet did loan in 1880 a work of Guillaumin (5IE-1880-64) (R90II,p293)

Personnaz, Antonin (1854-1936):
Exporter and small collector of impressionist works. He came from Bayonne and had a house in Auvers. Part of his collection is now in the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne (=M191)
In 1886 he did loan a work of Cassatt (8IE-1886-8).
He once owned the following works:
