Brandon at the Salon

Impressionism, a historical reconstruction:

Édouard Brandon (1831-1897)

A thematical impression of his paintings

At the Salon and other exhibitions

Introduction:
On this page you will find an impression of the paintings that Edouard Brandon exhibited at the Salon (=S) and at the Salon de la Société National des Beaux-Arts (=SNBA), at the posthumous auction at Hôtel Drouot (=HD18971213) and at other exhibitions. I render the works in a thematical way. Many suggestions are (very) uncertain or just given to compare. Many suggestions are also interchangeable, see the thematical overview of his pictures and the works he exhibited at the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874. See link for explanation of the subscriptions and my account. For info on the sources see at the bottom of this page and the main page about Edouard Brandon. Note: If you double click on the first picture (of a group of pictures) and then click on full screen, you can create a small slideshow. Enjoy!

Works related to Saint-Brigit:
Brandon made many prepatory studies for the wall paintings he made for the Saint-Brigit Chapel in Rome. Compare: 1IE-1874-32, Exposition du corps de Sainte-Brigitte à Rome, en 1392 (carton fusain) =? S1863-1979 Exposition du corps de sainte Brigitte. Several of them he exhibited at the Salon. Some of them were also part of the posthumous sale in 1897 (aR4;iR1). Here below you will find an impression. See also the thematical overview of his pictures.

Souvenirs from Italy:
Brandon made many pictures depicting every day life in Italy, when he was in Rome from 1856-63. But he exhibited just a few paintings. Besides that, he made many watercolours. Compare: 1IE-1874-31, Aquarelles; and: S1870-3144, Quinze aquarelles; même numéro: Souvenirs d’Italie. Many of these watercolours were part of the posthumous sale in 1897 (aR4;iR1). See also the thematical overview of his pictures.

Figure paintings:
Brandon sometimes exhibited some portraits / figure painting. See here below for an impression. He made many more, just of a few I could find a picture. See also the thematical overview of his pictures.

In the Synagogue:
Brandon made many pictures of scenes in a synagogue. Several of them he did exhibit. Here below you will find an impression. Compare: 1IE-1874-29, Première Lecture de la Loi; and: S1869-319, La sortie de la loi le jour de sabbat; and: SNBA-1890-126, Baar-Mitzwa (l’examen). See also the thematical overview of his pictures.

Studies of Rabbies and others:
At the 1897 posthumous sale, there were also many studies. Here below you will find some possible options.

Other works:
Brandon also exhibited works with some other themes. Here I render 2 of them.
