Within the early ‘impressionist’ art-movement:
Frédéric Bazille was an important member of the early ‘impressionist’ art-movement. He joined Monet, Renoir and Sisley at the studio of Gleyre (1862) and painted with them in the Fontainebleau forest (1863 onwards). Coming from a rich family and receiving a royal allowance from his father, he was able to support namely Monet and Renoir who often lived in poverty. Early 1868 he moved to 9, Rue de la Paix. This was close at Café Guerbois at 11, Grand-Rue. It was on the third floor and consisted of a studio and one heated room. April 1870 onwards he rented 8, Rue des Beaux-Arts (6th arondissement). This appartement was very small. Renoir regularly shared his lodgings at both adresses. (R31,p296)

To portray and to be portrayed:
Bazille did portray some of his friends (namely Renoir and Astruc) and he himself also was portrayed (by Renoir and Fantin-Latour↑↑). Also an example of being part of the ‘impressionist’ art-movement.
Painting style:
Frédéric Bazille was influenced by Manet and Courbet (R3,p646).
