Short biography:
George Viau was born 1855/03/29 in Paris. In 1859 the family moved to Saint-Petersbourg in Russia. His father died 1871/01/14. The family returned to Paris. George first was a dentist and since 1880 he had his own dentist school. He married 1882/09/11, they had 3 children: Alice, Louis and Blanche. They lived at 16, Avenue de l’Opera. Since 1887 they had an appartment at 47, Boulevard Haussmann. Since 1908 a house at 109, Boulevard Malesherbes. In 1896 he bought a property in Villennes-sur-Seine, about 30km west from Paris. He commanded Georges d’Espagnat and Maurice Denis to make decorative paintings. Many painters did visit Viau in Villenes. Since 1930 he also rented an appartment at 39, rue d’Artois in Paris, where he held part of his collection.
In his early years George Viau met comte Armand Doria and around 1881 he visited his Château d’Orrouy. Here he also met Henri Rouart. Later Viau did meet Degas at Rouart his home.
George Viau also was acquinted with Pissarro and Sisley.
Viau is mentioned in correspondances of the impressionists. Between Camille and Lucien Pissarro (1893); between Camille Pissarro and Monet (1894/10); between Renoir and Durand-Ruel (1903).
Viau was an amateur piano player and painter. He did copy two paintings of Renoir.
George Viau died 1939/12/18 at the age of 84.

An art-collector:
George Viau gathered a very large art-collection.
He first started to buy drawings, watercolours and small scaled paintings, namely of Cals and Vignon. 1890 onwards he started to buy paintings of Renoir, Cézanne, Caillebotte, Pissarro and Sisley. Many works he did buy directly from the artist. But, he also did buy at auction sales, namely from the collections of Murer (1896), Sisley (1899), Doria (1899), Degas (1918 +1919) and Hazard (1919).
More later Viau also collected works of Albert André, Édouard Vuillard, Georges d’Espagnat, Maurice Denis, Maximilien Luce, etc.
His collection included 150 works of Degas.
After his sales in 1907, 1909 and 1930 he made new purchases again and renewed his collection.
In 1925 Waldemar George wrote en article on his collection in L’Amour de l’art.

A lender to expositions:
George Viau never did lent an art-work to the ‘impressionist’ expositions held from 1874-1886 (R90II,p).
But, he was an important lender to many other expositions:
the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, namely works of Sisley;
the Centennial exposition in 1900;
