Jean-Baptiste Faure, short biography:
Opera singer and composer; famous baritone in the Paris Opéra.
Received the ‘Legion d’Honneur‘ in 1881.
Befriended with many impressionists. Joined their meetings.
Befriended with the art-dealer Durand-Ruel.
1870/71: stayed in London.
Faure was portrayed by Astruc, Desboutin and Manet.

Faure, an early collector:
One of the first collectors of impressionist works. Bought works from Degas, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley and Manet.
At one time Fauré possessed 68x Manet, 30x Sisley, 23x Monet and a smaller number of Renoir and Pissarro.
1872/04/29: bought 42 impressionist works at an auction. 1873: bought several Manets (2500-6000 franc) and 11 paintings of Degas. 1874: bought 6 works of Degas back from Durand-Ruel; received in return in 1876 two works and only in 1887 the other two promised; this poisoned their friendship.
Faure once owned between 45 and 50 paintings of Monet; 35 were made before 1877; he bought (at least) 5 paintings in 1874 and 3 in 1875 (see purchases).
Faure once owned 29 paintings of Pissarro; all were made before 1880. Of most it is not known since when they were owned by Faure. Many were part of the inventary of the collection of Faure in 1902↓ (R116I,p334). The known early purchases by Faure of paintings of Pissarro were: 1874: CCP285; 1875: CCP420 +421 +422 +425. Indirect purchases (via Durand-Ruel) were: 1873: CCP121 +215 +254; 1874: CCP250;
Faure once owned 32 paintings of Sisley. The known early purchases are: 1877: CCPP1; Indirect purchases (via Durand-Ruel) were: 1873: CCPP34; 1885: CCPP572;

A trip to England:
After the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874 in July Sisley made a trip to England together with Faure, who financed this trip in return for 6 paintings. Sisley would stay here till early Octobre.
Sisley made at least 15* paintings in England: CCPP147-161. Of 3 Faure was the first owner: CCPP151 +53 +154, probably 3 of the 6 promised paintings; 2 Faure indirectly obtained later: CCPP156 +158.
Note*: Daulte (1959) renders 14 paintings (R129,no.113-126). Stevens mentions there were 3 more made in Hampton Court which are not in Daulte, so in total 17 (R166,p132). Two aren’t rendered by the CCPP either.

Faure, buyer at auctions:
Jean-Baptiste Faure did buy his collection directly from the artists, indirect via art-dealers like Durand-Ruel and also indirectly via auction sales, like at Hôtel Drouot (=HD).

Faure, selling his collection:
Jean-Baptiste Faure gradually sold his collection and renewed it.
