Ernest Hoschedé (1837-1891), short biography: Ernest Hoschedé was a department-store owner, art-collector and art-critic. In 1863 he married Alice Raingo (1844-1911), from origin Belgian. They lived in Paris, 56, boulevard Haussmann. In 1870 Alice inherited château Rottembourg in Montgeron.
1875/09 Hoschedé his department-store had to close down. 1876/09/01 he started a new company.
1877/08/18 Hoschedé was declared bankrupt having a debt of 82.500 franc to the art-dealers Durand-Ruel and Georges Petit.
In the Autumn(?) of 1879 the family moved in with Monet in Vétheuil. Shortly after Ernest went living in Paris. Alice and the children stayed with Monet and moved with him to Poissy (1881/12) and later to Giverny (1883/04). 1891/03/18 Ernest died. 1892/07/16 Claude Monet married Alice.
Ernest Hoschedé was portrayed by Félix Bracquemond, Marcelin Desboutin, Carolus-Duran and Edouard Manet.

Montgeron: In 1870 Alice Hoschedé inherited château Rottembourg in Montgeron.
Edouard Manet would stay here in July 1877 14 days together with his wife (R22I,p123). Another source mentions that his friend Carolus-Duran was with him (iR94). Afterwards Monet would spent a long period here, at least from September up to November (R22I,p123-125).
Monet made in commission four decorative panels (R22,CR416↓+418↓+420+433↑), partly exhibited at the 3rd ‘impressionist’ exposition (3IE-1877-101 + 112). He made more works in this period: of the garden and the pond (CR417↓ +419↓); of Germaine (CR434↑). And also of the surroudings: of the surroundings woods where hunts took place (CR431-433), of the railroad track (CR421), of the river Yerres (CR423-425) and of a house in Yerres (CR422↓↓). Probably Monet did meet Gustvave Caillebotte, who lived (namely the summers) nearby in Yerres (a 3,5km walk; iR9). Somewhere during that autumn Monet stayed with his family and made some pictures in the surroundings of Argenteuil (CR426-430).
Later on, from 1879-97, Carolus-Duran would stay the summers in Montgeron; he also had an atelier in ‘Le Moustier’ (see).
