Introduction:
This page renders short information on Paul Berard, his art-collection and the auction sale of his collection.
Paul Berard namely was a benefactor of Auguste Renoir. Berard introduced Renoir to his friends Grimpel, Léon Clapisson and Albert Cahen d’Anvers, who also gave commissions to Renoir.
The emphasize is on the works of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions.
In 1881 Bérard lent a gouache of Pissarro to the 6th ‘impressionist’ exposition (no.79).

Short biography:
Paul Berard was an embassy secretary and a buiseness man. He had a town mansion at 20, Rue Pigalle in Paris (R5,p231). He also lived at the château Wargemont at the Normandy coast, just outside Dieppe. Jacques-Emile Blanche was a neighbour of Berard.

 

Paul Berard, benefactor of Renoir:
Auguste Renoir had met Paul Berard at Charpentier, though another source writes that Renoir was introduced by Deudon (R31,p22). Renoir would stay with Berard several times at Wargemont. Between 1879 and 1884 Renoir would make many portraits of the Berard family*. In 1900 Paul Berard presented the badge for the Légion d’Honneur to Renoir.

Paul Berard, art-collector:
In 1881 Berard lent a gouache of Pissarro to the 6th ‘impressionist’ exposition (no.79).
1905/05/08+09 there was a sale of Berard his collection at Georges Petit; the revenues were high, namely of Renoir CR457↑↑.
It included also CCPP 63 +76 +182 of Sisley (R396,p525).

 

 

Château Wargemont:
Paul Berard also lived at the château Wargemont at the Normandy coast.
Auguste Renoir  made many pictures in these surroundings, like in Berneval, Dieppe, Pourville.

Grimpel, Clapisson and Cahen d’Anvers, relations of Paul Berard:
Paul Berard introduced Auguste Renoir to his friends Grimpel, Léon Clapisson and Albert Cahen d’Anvers.
Renoir portrayed the daughters of Grimpel Yvonne and Hélène. The first was exhibited at the Salon (de la Société des Artistes Français) in 1882 and the first maybe in 1881. He also portrayed his son, Maurice (R30=193,no427). The Grimpel family had an estate in Chatou (R30,no427).
Renoir also portrayed the wife of Léon Clapisson. The second portrait was exhibited at the Salon (de la Société des Artistes Français) in 1883. The first was not exepted by Clapisson and shown by Durand-Ruel at several expositions (R31,p238). Renoir also made a sketchy, small portrait (R30=R193=1F,no546=1D430=2D1091).
Renoir also made a portrait of Albert Cahen d’Anvers, which was located ‘Wargemont’ and dated 1881/09/09 (R30=193=1F478=1D362=2D558). Cahen d’Anvers also belonged to the circle of Berard. Renoir would also portray his daughters (R30,no428+458)
