Meta-Impressionism: Art-collectors

Victor Chocquet

(1821-91)

a benefactor of the impressionists

Introduction:
This page renders short information on Victor Chocquet and his wife; the loans to the ‘impressionist’ expositions, their art-collection and the posthumous auction sale of their collection.
The emphasize is on the works of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions.
Chocquet was a benefactor of the impressionist, namely of Paul Cézanne, Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet.
Victor Chocquet, his wife and his children were several times portrayed by Renoir and Cézanne.
Note: Walther (R3,p654) and the catalogues of the ‘impressionist’ expositions, and the posthumous auction sale all wrongly write ‘Choquet’ instead of Chocquet.

Victor Chocquet, short biography:
Victor Chocquet retired in 1877 after years of service as a supervisor in the customs service.
Choquet lived at 198, Rue de Rivoli, Paris.
Monet  painted 4 paintings of the Tuileries from the top the building where Chocquet lived (R22,CR401-4); the first 3 of them were exhibited at the 3rd ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1877 (no.95+119+105).
In 1877 Duranty wrote to Zola: ‘whose wife … will some day have an income of 50.000 francs’.
1882/04 his wife had inherited a fortune (R5,p129); Walther writes Victor did (R3,p654).
In 1890 they bought a big house in Rue Monsigny.
1891/04/07 Chocquet died.
In 1899 Mme Chocquet died.
1899/07/01+03+04 there was an auction of their inheritance↓.

Victor Chocquet, benefactor of the impressionists:
In 1875 during the auction at Hôtel Drouot he discovered Renoir and others.
There is discussion if he (and others) also were among the buyers, though they were present.
Shortly afterwards he started also to support Cézanne.
1876/02/04 he met Monet through Cézanne.

Victor Chocquet, lender to the ‘impressionist’ expositions:
In 1876 Chocquet did loan 8 paintings to the 2nd ‘impressionist’ exposition of 1876:
6 of Renoir (no. 210, 211, 213, 214, 215, 216),
1 of Monet (no.158) and
1 of Pissarro (no. 199).
In 1877 Chocquet loaned most of the pictures that Cézanne exhibited, but this was not noted in the catalogue (R2,p204).
It is said that Chocquet daily attended the 3rd ‘impressionist’ exposition.

Victor Chocquet, art-collector:
Chocquet did buy of Monet CR291 1876/o2/05 and in 1878 CR72.
In 1877 he bought a smaller copy of the ‘Moulin de la Galette’ of Renoir, compare 3IE-1877-186.
