Durand-Ruel gallery

Impressionism: a marketing name

Introduction:
There were many exhibitions held in the Durand-Ruel galleries.
On this page you will find first several exhibitions held in the Durand-Ruel branches. Then several loan exhibitions in which since 1882 ‘Impressionism’ was used as a marketing name. And at last exhibitions to which Durand-Ruel lent several art-works (namely) of the Impressionists Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley.
Note: this page will be developed further more in the future.

Expos in the Durand-Ruel branches

The London branche:
From 1870-75 Durand-Ruel held 9 exhibitions of the Society of French Artists in London, see link for more info.
In 1871 +1872 Auguste de Molins exhibited with Durand-Ruel in London (R88;iR4).
1875/12 Durand-Ruel sold his gallery in London to to Deschamps (R5,p92). He almost didn’t sell works of the ‘impressionists’ in England (R5,p77).

The Brussels branche:
I have no information of exhibitions held in the Durand-Ruel gallery in Brussels.

The Vienna branche:
I have no information of exhibitions held in the Durand-Ruel gallery in Vienna.
Noteworthy is that Durand-Ruel contributed to the Welt Austellung (Universal Exhibition; Exposition Universelle) in Vienna in 1873. He had sent in two works of Sisley and mabye a work of Monet (R166,p36;R22IV,p1016+no213). Several French painters exhibited, including the Barbizon painters Chintreuil, Corot, Daubigny, Diaz, Jules Dupré (R231/1878,p113). It is possible that some of these works came from the Durand-Ruel stock (compare the Recueil d’Estampes of 1873).

The Paris branche:
The Paris branche is the oldest and most permanent gallery of Durand-Ruel. There were two galleries: galleries at 16, Rue Laffitte + 11, Rue le Peletier. In 1883 he opened a new gallery at 9, Boulevard de la Madeleine↓. Several exhibitions were held here. Here below you will find some of them.

  • 1878/07/15 exhibition of 380 (or: 360) paintings of Delacroix, Millet, Rousseau, Troyon and others; no succes (R2,p262; R5,p110)
  • 1888/05/25 -06/25: Exposition in Paris (or New York); it included works of many impressionists like Boudin; Caillebotte; Lépine, Morisot; Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley and related painters like Brown and Whistler. See seperate page.
    Note: Monet didn’t partake.
  • 1889/01/23: first exhibition of the ‘Société des Peintres-Graveurs‘ by Durand-Ruel including Bracquemond, Pissarro, Cassatt and Redon (R5,p168;R73,p18;R44,p28). Other exhibitions would follow and Félix Bracquemond was an important force behind them and was the first president (R44,p28;R88). In 1891 they excluded artists who were not French by birth, thus excluding Pissarro and Cassatt who had their own exhibition at Durand-Ruel (R44,p31).
  • 1898, 1899, 1910: small group exhibitions in Paris with works of Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley (R31,p316)
The 1898 is not confirmed by Wildenstein (R22IV,p1018).
1899/04: it included 36 works of Monet (R22IV,p1018)
    1910/06/01 – 25: it included 17 works of Monet (R22IV,p1020).

The Paris branche 2 / solo expo:
In 1883 Durand-Ruel organised a serie of solo exhibitions from February till June. All exhibitions were held at his new gallery at 9, Boulevard de la Madeleine, Paris, which he thus inaugurated.
It included solo exhibitions of Boudin (150x in Februar); Monet (60x; in March); Renoir (70x; in April); Pissarro (70x; in May); Sisley (60x; in June).
Degas refused to join (R31,p315; R5,p134/5).

Loan exhibitions:

Some exhibitions were so-called ‘loan exhibitions’ and comprised namely pictures lent by the Durand-Ruel galleries. Striking is that many of these international exhibitions were called “impressionist”. It seems that Durand-Ruel used the term “impressionists” as a marketing name. See for more information the page on international exhibitions and international “impressionist” exhibitions.

London:
There were several loan exhibitions held in London. It is likely that Durand-Ruel used his former connections when he had his London branche. Many of these exhibitions were called “impressionists”.

  • 1882/summer:  ‘Exposition Impressionniste in London; with Cassatt, DegasMonet (4x), Renoir and Sisley and others
    Sources: R22IV,p1016; R31,p315;R5,p129/130;R2,p382;

USA:
There were several loan exhibitions held in the USA. Several of these exhibitions were called “impressionists”. The most well known is the one in 1886 in New York.

France:
Durand-Ruel contributed to many exhibitions in France. But, not many can be seen as an explicit loan exhbition.

Europe:
Durand-Ruel contributed to many exhibitions in Europe. But, not many can be seen as an explicit loan exhbition.

  • 1880/09 exhibition in Oran, Alger; send in 233 (most impressionist) paintings (R5,p118)
Note: Alger was a colony of France and therefore is included in this Europe overview.

Important contributions:

The Durand-Ruel galleries delivered important contributions to several exhibitions. Namely by lending works of Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley. Here below you will find some examples.
See for more information the folowing pages: international exhibitions; international “impressionist” exhibitions; Les XX; La Libre Esthetique; Centennial exhibitions (1912 Saint-Petersburg; 1914 Copenhagen).
Note: when it is not explicitly clear that Durand-Ruel delivered most of the pictures (and that it was a loan exhibition), the exhibitions will be noted here below.

France:
Here below you will find some important contributions of the Durand-Ruel galleries to exhibitions in France. Notably are the contributions to regional exhibitions.

Europe:
Here below you will find some important contributions of the Durand-Ruel galleries to exhibitions in Europe.

  • 1871/05/12 London: It seems that neither the French government, neither French artists had submitted paintings for the International Exhibition of Fine Arts held in South-Kensington (London) in May. Therefore the French commissioner-general, Edmond Du Sommerard, had asked Durand-Ruel to arrange some art-works for the French section. Durand-Ruel again approached private art-collectors, namely James Staats Forbes who lent 8 paintings (aR1).
Two winterlandscapes of Pissarro were exhibited, maybe CCP180+187 (R116I,p132+361). Monet exhibited two portraits of Camille (R22,CR66+CR163) and probably also 2 marines (R22I,p87;R88). Works of Corot, Courbet, Daubigny, Fantin-Latour, Jongkind and Manet (1x) also were present (R116I,p132). The works were neglected (R5,p70).
  • in 1883 the Durand-Ruel galleries contributed to other international exhibitions with Impressionist paintings in London, Boston, Rotterdam and Berlin (R5,p422)
Note: it is not sure if the exhibition in Rotterdam actually took place. Sure is that Durand-Ruel sent works to Joseph de Kuyper in Rotterdam. It included two works of Sisley: The chestnut tree at Saint-Mammès; Moret waterfront, evening. (R166,p52)
  • 1885, June: in Brussels “exposition de MM. Degas, Monet (3x?), Pissarro, Renoir et Sisley” (R5,p143; R31,p315; R22IV,p1017)
  • 1885/07/12: exhibition in Amsterdam with impressionists works (R5,p144)
  • 1885, Geneva; with Monet (2x) (R22IV,p1017)
