Durand-Ruel Gallery
A good alternative for the ‘impressionists’?
Introduction:
Durand-Ruel had openend 1870/12/10 his ‘German gallery’ in London at 168, New Bond Street. Here he held exhibitions of the Society of French Artists* (=SFA). From 1870-74 Durand-Ruel organised 9 exhibitions; in 1875+76 3 additional were organised. In total some 1616 pictures were exhibited, of which 347 (22%) were Barbizon paintings↓. Also works of the Impressionists were exhibited. Several of them were owned by Durand-Ruel, who had started to buy their works since the end of 1870. Due to financial problems Durand-Ruel had to close in December 1875 his gallery in London (R5,p92;R116I,p147). Another source mentions that he already transferred the gallery by the end of 1874 (aR1).
For the Impressionists these exhibitions were without much success, Durand-Ruel almost didn’t sell works of the Impressionists in England (R5,p77). Still, in 1872+73 Degas, Monet, Pissarro and Sisley didn’t submit to the Salon. Was that because they expected these exhibitions in London could be a good alternative? Further investigation is necessary for rendering a profound answer.
These exhibitions in London can be seen as a forshadowing of his promoting the impressionists since the early 1880s.
Other partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions that also exhibited in London were: Stanislas Lépine, Auguste de Molins and Alphonse Legros (R410,p102). His relation with these artists also needs further investigation.
On this page you will also find some information on the the International Exhibition of Fine Arts held in South-Kensington (London) in May 1871, because Durand-Ruel had a large influence on it. You will also find content from a review in The Art Journal of 1875/01/01, noting many works of Legros that were exhibited.
At the end of this page you will find an account of some exhibited works.
Note: The information on this page is limited and only based on indirect sources. I couldn’t find digital catalogues. The focus on this webpage is on which ‘impressionists’ did exhibit, when, with how many works and (if possible) with what works.
Note*: a society created by Durand-Ruel to promote the artists in his stock (aR1); for publicity reasons (R5,p65). It initially was led by a committee of seven artists, namely Barbizon painters; Durand-Ruel himself was the director (aR1). I wonder if there were official members. In sources on Impressionism I read nothing about Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley or others becoming members.
Many Barbizon paintings:
In total some 1616 pictures were exhibited by the Society of French Artists, of which 347 (22%) were Barbizon paintings. In total there were 109 works shown of Corot, 37 of Daubigny, 23 of Diaz, 83 of Dupré, 3 of Jacque, 37 of J.F. Millet, 39 of Rousseau and 17 of Troyon. The sales of the Barbizon painters was quite successfull (aR1).
1870/12/10, 1st exhibition:
First Annual Exhibition of the Society of French Artists in the German Gallery of Durand-Ruel. Mainly works of Barbizon painters (like Corot (8x), Courbet, Diaz, Daubigny (8x), Dupré (16x), Millet and Rousseau (6x) were shown, but also of French Romantics. Monet also did send in 1 painting.
Several things are unclear. One source claims Pissarro showed a view on Sydenham and a view on Norwood (R5,p65); another source claims that Pissarro wasn’t included till 1871/03/06 (R116I,p130). One source mentions that the first exhibition contained two distinct hangings, the first of 108 paintings and the second of 144; the 2nd hanging included 64 works of the first and 80 new ones (aR1). This second hanging started 1871/03/06 (aR1), which is the same date as what other call the 2nd exhibition. One source mentions this 1st exhibition showed 144 works (R5,p65), which is the same amount of the mentioned second hanging (aR1).
1871/03/06, 2nd? exhibition:
2nd Annual Exhibition of the Society of French Artists at the German Gallery. There is much unclear about this exhibition. One source indicates this was the 1st exhibition (R116I,p361), but elsewhere this source affirms this was the 2nd exhibition (R116I,p130). One source mentions the exhibition started the 6th of March (R116I,p361+130); other sources indicate it started the 18th of March (R5,p69). One source indicates that the second hanging of the first exhibition started 1871/03/06, mentioning it contained 144 works (aR1). The same source claims that the 2nd exhibition was a Summer exhibition (aR1); something that is affirmed by another source (R22IV,p1016). One source mentions that Degas visited this 2nd exhibition in October (iR40).
One source mentions 139 works were shown (R5,p69), including works of Monet (1 or 2) and Pissarro (2x) (R22IV,p1016;R116I,p361).
One source specifies that at the Summer exhibition 4 works of Corot, 10 of Dupré, 13 of Rousseau and 7 of Troyon were shown. Notably were works from the Laurent-Richard collection. (aR1)
1871/05/12, International Exhibition in South Kensington:
It seems that neither the French government, neither French artists had submitted paintings for the International Exhibition of Fine Arts held in South-Kensington (London) in May. Therefore the French commissioner-general, Edmond Du Sommerard, had asked Durand-Ruel to arrange some art-works for the French section. Durand-Ruel again approached private art-collectors, namely James Staats Forbes who lent 8 paintings (aR1).
Two winterlandscapes of Pissarro were exhibited, maybe CCP180+187 (R116I,p132+361). Monet exhibited two portraits of Camille (R22,CR66+CR163) and probably also 2 marines (R22I,p87;R88). Works of Corot, Courbet, Daubigny, Fantin-Latour, Jongkind and Manet (1x) also were present (R116I,p132). The works are neglected (R5,p70). These exhibitions were part of a serie of annual international exhibitions (of all fine arts, industries and inventions) held from 1871-74 (iR3).
1872/02, 3rd exhibition:
3rd Exhibition of the Society of French Artists at the German Gallery of Durand-Ruel. It lasted from February till April (aR1). It included 12 works of Corot, 12 of Dupré and 2 of J.F. Millet (aR1). It included also works of Degas (1x) and Pissarro (3x).
1872 (summer), 4th exhibition:
4th Annual Exhibition of the Society of French Artists at the German Gallery of Durand-Ruel 168, New Bond Street. One source mentioned it started in May (aR1), another the 4th of June (R5,p73).
It included works of Degas, Monet (?x), Pissarro (4x) +? Sisley (R5,p73;R2;R22IV,p1016;R116I,p361;R396,p528). Prominent were two paintings of J.F. Millet.
1872/11/02, 5th exhibition:
5th Annual Exhibition of the Society of French Artists at the Durand-Ruel gallery at 168, New Bond Street.
One source calls it an Autumn exhibition (aR1), another a winter exhibition (R116I,p137), another that it started the 2nd of November (R5,p73).
It included works of Degas (2x?), Manet, Monet (2x), Pissarro (2x), Renoir (1x) and Sisley (2x). Prominent were works of J.F. Millet.

Sources call it the Spring exhibition (aR1;R22IV,p1016); one source mentions it took place in June (R5,p85).
Works were shown of Corot (9x), Daubigny (3x), Manet, Monet (2x), Pissarro (4x), Sisley.
Denvir (wrongly) writes this exhibition opened in September 1875 and that Degas, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley joined (R5,p92).

1875, 10th exhibition:
10th Exhibition of the Society of French Artists at the German Gallery. Durand-Ruel had sold the gallery to Deschamps, the nephew of Gambart, who had previously been the secretary of the society (aR1). Another source claims that Durand-Ruel shot down his gallery after the 10th exhibition held in 1875 (R116I,p147); and another source that he did so December 1875 (R5,p92).
Works were shown of Pissarro (2x) (R116I,p362).
1875, 11th exhibition:
Catalogue: VAM London (M65); Getty (iR60)
1876, 12th exhibition:
A twelfth exhibition was held (in the Spring of) 1876, although by then no longer under the auspices of the Society of French Artists (aR1) and (probably) at the Deschamps Gallery. Another source mentions: 1876/04 art-dealer Deschamps exhibited works of Degas (M23), Manet, Morisot and Sisley in London (R5,p94).
Other artists that joined:
In 1871 + 1872 Auguste de Molins exhibited with Durand-Ruel in London (R88;iR4).
1875/01/01, article in The Art Journal, vol.1:
An article in The Art Journal (vol.1) on an exposition in London of the Society of French Artists reviewed that ‘M. Durand-Ruel may be said to have specially undertaken to present to English eyes the most cultivated efforts of French landscape-painters.’ It is unclear to which exhibition this article refers. Several works are mentioned and some also decribed: Millet exhibited a series of sketches and ‘The old stone house’ (no.52). There were 3 pictures by Legros, including a portrait of Mr. R.A. Woolner (no.66). A study of a head by Ribot (no.15). The breakfast table (no.5) and The Honeymoon (no.112) by E. Duez. Two small studies including a church interior by Alma-Tadema (no.8+11). Fishing boats at sea by Boulard (no.42). Contributions of Mme Cazin, including Cutting hem (loi). (iR19)
Probably in this same volume on page 240 there was a second article on ‘The Society of French Artists, Bond Street’ writing it included 123 drawings and etchings of Legros and also his Chantres Espagnols. About his Un Pélérinage, the autor wrote ‘he has never … brought forth the devotional sentiment so naturally and sweetly as in the picture’. Other works mentioned (and described) were The Market-place at Ploudalmeizeau, Finisterre by L. Lhermitte. Munkacsy: Washerwomen. ‘Chess-Players’ by Roybet. ‘Pond’ by Jules Dupre. Autumn by Münthe. Normandy Orchard by C. F. Daubigny. Corot: half-dozen charming landscapes. Fantin: flower-painting. Troyon: Shepherd’s Dog. Jacque: Shepherdess. Clara Montalba: Landscape. Artz: Gathering Sticks. H. Pille: Flemish Interior, Seventeenth Century. Fortuny: Bull-Fight. Diaz: Eastern Girls. Mme Cazin: A Sussex Lane in Twilight. Mrs. Alma-Tadema: Light and Shade. Dalon: lady’s portrait, sculpture.
