Meta-Impressionism / other exhibitions

Solo exhibitions

At Durand-Ruel

1883 onwards

Introduction:
In 1883 Durand-Ruel organised a serie of solo exhibitions with works of Boudin, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley from February till June. All exhibitions were held at his new gallery at 9, Boulevard de la Madeleine, Paris, which he thus inaugurated (R31,p301+315;R51,p237). These exhibitions can be seen as an alternative for the ‘impressionist’ expositions held between 1874 – 1886. These solo exhibitions were a way of being promoted for the artist and (indirectly) to sell their art-works. Degas refused to join (R5,p134/5).
Later on Durand-Ruel organised more solo exhibitions in Paris and New York. Durand-Ruel also had galleries at 16, Rue Laffitte + 11, Rue le Peletier in Paris.

Solo exhibitions at Durand-Ruel in 1883:

1883/02/01 – 25, Boudin:
Durand-Ruel inaugurated his new gallery at 9, Boulevard de la Madeleine, Paris in Februar 1883 with an exposition of Eugène Boudin. He showed 150 paintings, and also pastels and watercolours. In 1881 Durand-Ruel had bought his complete stock and became his main buyer.
Announcement in L’Europe Artiste (1883/01/07) and in La Petite Presse (1883/02/02): “M. Eug. Boudin, the well-known seascape painter, will open, from 1 to 25 February, 9, boulevard de la Madeleine, an exhibition of his works, including paintings, aquarelles et pastels.” (iR40/bpt6k119626q) + (iR40/bpt6k47138862)

1883/03/01 – 27?: Exposition des oeuvres de Cl. Monet:
In March 56 works of Claude Monet were exhibited + 4x outside the catalogue = 56+4hc=60. All works were loans of art-collectors, including 12 of Durand-Ruel. See link for an overview of the exhibited pictures.
It included CR39 +172 +177 +184 +217 +255 +263 +289 +290 +292 +324 +356 +?373 +401 +402 +442 +?489 +539 +548 +625 + 628 +630 +631 +634 +694 +695 +711 +724 +726 +730 +733 +734 +?736 +743 +744 +746 +748 +751 +755 (or 756) +758 +760 (or 762) +761 +765 +769 +?770 +?771 +776 +778 +?792 +?794 +796 +797 +806 +?808 +814 +951 +952 (R22IV,p1016).
L’Europe Artiste (1883/03/04) + Le Tintamarre (1883/03/04) announced: ‘Claude Monet will open an exhibition of his works at 9, boulevard de la Madeleine from 1 to 27 March.’ (iR40,bpt6k119626q) + (iR40,bpt6k5686868v). The Courrier de l’art (1883/03/01, p103) also indicated that the exposition lasted till the 27th (iR40,bpt6k55671968); so did Le Siècle (1883/03/07) (iR40, bpt6k7565023t); and the L’Universe Illustré (1883,p147) who also called him ’the well known landscapist’ (iR40,bpt6k30763665). Most sources stated it lasted till the 25th, just like the other exhibitions. The catalogue doesn’t render dates, just written with pencil is ‘1er March 1883’. So, or the comtemporary sources are wrong, or in the press release from 1883 a wrong date was included.
Genio (?) rendered a review in Le progrès artistique (1883/03/09) (iR40/bpt6k23673266): ‘M. Claude Monet is one of those who carry the flag of Impressionism high and firm. He painted his canvases with a devouring and … deplorable activity; 56 of his works were exhibited… Some of the landscapes are magical, bordering on the phantasmagorical. (…) This over-colouring often produces unbelievable effects. (…) M. Monet has sent flowers and fruit of a dazzling coulour; he uses tones that are really too raw… There are some very accurate impressions, but nature and light make the objects even more precise.’

1883/04/01 – 25: Renoir:
Durand-Ruel organised ‘Exposition des oeuvres de P.A. Renoir’ with 70 (most recently) art-works by Renoir. The preface of the catalogue was written by Duret.
La Justice (1883/03/30) announced ‘From 1 to 25 April, the painter Renoir will be opening an exhibition of his work at 9, boulevard de la Madeleine.’ (iR40,bpt6k770415k). Le Rappel (1883/04/04) mentioned ‘Today, from 8 till 11 hour in the evening, 9, boulevard de la Madeleine, inauguration of the exhibition of works by the Impressionist painter Renoir.’ (iR40,bpt6k7540631b); note: this announcement was published the 4th, not the 1st.
Guynon reviewed in La Lanterne (1883/04/05): He calls Monet ‘A deeply inspired and original landscape artist, an astonishing colourist, destined to revive the tradition of the true masters.’ He calls Renoir a portraitist and figure painter and praises him namely from his portrait children ‘It’s wonderful to see the life he breathes into those marvelled eyes, the kindness on those wrinkle-free foreheads, the smile on those little pink lips!’ He mentiones his ‘broad, bold brushstroke’. After these praises he criticises his dance and canoeing themes as ‘… a conception so vulgar, so far removed from true great art? Nature, yes; but leave such poverties to the precious artists of the so-called impressionist school!’ (iR40,bpt6k7529627p)
The catalogue contained an essay by Thédore Duret (there is one in the library of Stanford University) (iR465//1651329).

It included CCP 147 +?176 +215 +269 +313 +327 +448 +488 +590 (or 685) +618 (or 670) +631 +632 +639 +642 +647 +651 +653 +655 +656 +657 +665 +677 +?680 +682 +684 +688 +695 +699 (or 743) +704 +705 +712 +716.
La Marseillaise announced (1883/04/30) ‘From 1 to 25 May, M. C. Pissarro will open an exhibition of his works at 9, boulevard de la Madeleine.’ (iR40,6d6t51147687p). There also was an announcement in Le Monde (1883/04/29) (iR40, bpt6k6783936r)
In a letter to Monet (1883/06/12) Pissarro suggests that his exhibition hardly was attended (R166,p40).

1883/06/01 – 25, Alfred Sisley:
In June there was a solo exhibition with 60 works of Alfred Sisley. From the start Sisley had doubts if solo-exhibitions would be succesfull; in expressed so in a letter to Durand-Ruel 1882/11/05. Faure send in 7 works, Duret 3, Dr. de Bellio 2, but only 6 works of Faure were hung. In a letter (1883/05/26) Pissarro asked Dr. Gachet to send in his Canal Saint-Martin (CR16=CCPP17). Durand-Ruel send in works from his gallery and his private collection. (R166,p40) In a letter to Monet (1883/06/12) Pissarro suggests that this exhibition hardly was attended (R166,p40).
In August Georges Petit bought paintings that had been shown in June: The waterside street at Saint-Mammès, View of Moret, Hellhole farm, The Seine at Saint-Denis; Banks of the Seine, Waterside hut, August afternoon. (R166,p52,note50); note the CCPP doesn’t mention these transactions (R396,p521).
L’Europe Artiste (1883/06/03) announced ‘M. A. Sisley will open an exhibition of his works at 9, boulevard de la Madeleine from 1 to 25 June.’ (iR40/bpt6k119626q) In the Journal des Artistes of 1884/01/11 there was a referrence to the “exposition des oeuvres de M. A. Sisley, 9, Boulevard de Madeleine” rendering the date the 2nd of June (iR40,bpt6k4576874v).
