Recueil d’estampes 1873

Introduction:
In 1873 Paul Durand-Ruel made an inventory of his stock, commissioned artists to make etchings of these art-works and published this ‘Recueil d’estampes’ (collection of prints) with 300 reproductions divided in 6 volumes of each 50 works. Volume one included a preface by Silvestre. The most engravings were done by Laguillermie; 4 were done by Félix Bracquemond (no.32 +56 +150 +197).
Some works of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions were included. Most works were landscapes of namely the Barbizon painters. George Michel, Corot, Dupré, Jean-François Millet, Delacroix and Rousseau were most prominently represented. Some works of Monet, Pissarro and Sisley were included. Artists that would become dominant in the 1880s in the stock of the Durand-Ruel gallery.

The most prominent artists:
In the recueil d’estampes of 1873 six artists are very extendedly represented, representing 160 of the 300 pictures.
It includes 29! paintings of Georges Michel: all landscapes; 8 namely depicting trees (and roads); 7 waters; 6 buildings; 6 mills; 2 skies; 6 give an indication of location; just 1 an indication of atmospherical influence.
It includes 28! paintings of Corot: 3 women figures (in an interior); 3 nudes; 1 biblical scene and 21 landscapes; 6 of them give an indication of location; 0 of them give an indication of atmospherical influence; 3 renders buildings; 8 more explicitly render figures, of which 4 from mythology or literature.
It includes 28! paintings of Dupré: all landscapes; 7 give an indication of location; 4 give an indication of atmospherical influence; 9 are marines; 12 show a pond, river or other kind of water; 4 explicitly depict trees, 4 animals and 3 buildings.
It includes 28! paintings of Jean-François Millet: 1 landscape; 14 landscapes with figures / labourers (including 9 shepherds); 3 labourers near a building; 5 figures in interiors; 5 nudes (including 2 mythological figures); 3 paintings give an indication of atmospherical influence and just 1 an indication of location.
It includes 26! paintings of Delacroix: with 4 oriental scenes; 5 (oriental) scenes with (wild) animals or horses; 6 historical scenes; 5 biblical and religious scenes; 5 metaphorical scenes (including the 4 seasons); 1 still-life.
It includes 21! paintings of Rousseau: all landscapes; 12 give an indication of location (several in the Fontainebleau forest); 2 give an indication of atmospherical influence; 3 render both.

 

The ‘impressionists’:
The recueil d’estampes of 1873 included 14 paintings of 4 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions: 2 of Degas; 4 landscapes of Monet; 5 landscapes of Pissarro; 3 landscapes of Sisley.

 

Pre-Impressionists:
The recueil d’estampes of 1873 included several other landscape painters (pre-impressionists), several with connections with the school of Barbizon. Diaz, Troyon and (probably) Emile van Marcke were represented with 10 pictures; the last two all with landscapes with animals. Other landscapists were: Barye (4x), Rosa Bonheur (1x), Daubigny (just 1), Decamps (3x), Jules Héreau (4x), de Kniff  (1x), La Rochenoir (1x); Ziem (2x).
It included also some other pre-impressionists: Bonvin (2x); Courbet (7x); Ribot (3x);

 

Para-Impressionists:
The recueil d’estampes of 1873 included several para-impressionists: John-Lewis Brown (2x); Fantin-Latour (1x); Lhermitte (11x); Manet (7x); Puvis de Chavannes (6x); Alfred Stevens (1x); Emile Vernier (2x).

 

Meta-Impressionists:
As mentioned Delacroix was well represented in the recueil d’estampes of 1873 (with 26 pictures). Most other meta-impressionists were represented with just 1 or 2 pictures, except Henri-Léopold Lévy (8x).
