General info:
Puvis de Chavannes had several connections with ‘impressionists’.
A source from 1894 claims he was born 1825/12/14. Came from a nobel family.
Pupil of Henry Scheffer and Thomas Couture.
He was an important forerunner of Symbolism.
Made many large decorative paintings also for homes and public buildings.
Exhibited regularly at the Salon, he received a 2nd class medal (Histoire) in 1861, a medal in 1864, a medal of honour in 1882.
At the Exposition Universelle in 1867 he showed 4 reduced versions of (mural) paintings he had exhibited earlier at the Salons of 1861-64; he received a 3rd class medal for his works as a whole. At the Exposition Universelle of 1889 five works of Puvis de Chavannes were exhibited, in 1900 (at the Centennal) 4 works.
There were solo exhibitions held at Durand-Ruel in 1887 + 94.
In 1890 he was co-founder of the Sociéte National des Beaux-Arts. (R298,p168).
He was appointed in the Légion d’Honneur as Chevalier (1867), as Officier (1877).
