overview expositions

Where and when did Sisley show his art-works?
On this page you will find an overview of when and where Alfred Sisley showed his art-works. We will start with the works he showed at regional exhibitions, the Salon and the ‘impressionist’ expositions.
Note: many paintings were loans by the art-dealer Durand-Ruel, see overview of titles.

At regionale exhibitions:
Alfred Sisley sometimes exhibited at regional exhibitions; before 1874; between 1874 – 1886; after 1886. Several works were loans by Durand Ruel. (iR1;R166,p263-281). See account.

At the Salon:
In 1866 Alfred Sisley had debuted at the Salon with two paintings. In 1868 he exhibited one painting. In 1867 and 1869 he was rejected. In 1867 he signed a petition for a Salon des Refusés (R166,p261). In 1870 he showed two paintings. In 1872 and 1873 he did not submit. See account and his pictures and the Salon.

London 1872-74:
In 1872 the art-dealer Durand-Ruel started to buy paintings of Sisley. Some of these works were exhibited in London at the ‘Exhibition of the Society of French Artists’ from 1872-74. Namely at the 4th, the 5th, the 6th and the 8th Annual Exhibition of the Society of French Artists at the German Gallery of Durand-Ruel 168, New Bond Street (=London-4SFA-1872, etc.).
Gale mentions that in 1872 six works of Sisley were exhibited (R53,p141); but in 1872 there were 3 different exhibitions.
Gale mentions that in 1873 five works of Sisley were exhibited (R53,p141); but in 1873 there were 2 different exhibitions.

He showed 5+1hc=6 paintings at the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874 (=1IE-1874).
Sisley showed 8+2hc=10 paintings at the 2nd ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1876 (=2IE-1876).
