Durand-Ruel purchases

Meta-Impressionism:

Purchases

Durand-Ruel gallery

Introduction:
Paul Durand-Ruel was the most important art-dealer for the Impressionists. Probably without his efforts the works of the Impressionists wouldn’t have been known as they are today. For the Impressionists Durand-Ruel was crucial for financial support and for becoming known in France and on the international art-market.
From whom did he purchase art-works? When? How many? Which works? For which price?
On this page his purchases will be divided into two periods. The early purchases in the 1870s and the later purchases 1880 onwards.
We will focus on the purchases from the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions and related artists.
Note: this page will be developed further more in the future.

Purchases from Barbizon painters:
At first the Durand-Ruel Gallery concentrated on works of the Barbizon painters and other landscapists / pre-impressionists. Since 1851 Paul Durand-Ruel worked in the gallery of his father (R3,p659). 1865/06/15 Paul Durand-Ruel took over the gallery at the Rue de la Paix of his departed father and continued supporting the Barbizon school. This result we can see in the Recueil d’estampes of 1873.
This recueil d’estampes renders 300 reproductions of (mostly) paintings. George Michel* (29x), Corot (28x), Dupré* (28x), Jean-François Millet (28x), Delacroix (26x) and Rousseau (21x) were most prominently represented. There were also works of other landscapists: Diaz (10x), Troyon* (10x), Emile van Marcke* (10x), Barye* (4x), Rosa Bonheur* (1x), Daubigny (just 1), Decamps* (3x), Jules Héreau* (4x), de Kniff * (1x), La Rochenoir* (1x); Ziem (2x) and also of other pre-impressionists Bonvin* (2x); Courbet (7x); Ribot* (3x).
In the early 1870s there had been several posthumous auction sales* of the works of the Barbizon painters. Did Durand-Ruel continue to buy their works? Known is that in 1882 Durand-Ruel did sell paintings of the Barbizon painters for low prices (aR1).
The 1887 sale in New York gives an indication of what artists were still part of his stock. It included:
Georges Michel* (no.13 +21 +22 +81 +82)
Note*: not in the overview of artists in the Durand-Ruel collection (iR198).
Note**: Here below you will find some of these sales.
