1870

The Salon of 1870, short info:
The Salon of 1870 (the 88th) lasted from 1th of May till the 20th of June in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris (iR4;iR3). The catalogue mentions 3929 partakers and 5485 numbers (iR1), which was quite extended. There were 3 artists appointed as Officier in the Légion d’Honneur, namely Alexandre Bida, Philippe Rousseau, Aimé Millet (sculptor). The Médaille d’Honneur was awarded to Tony Robert-Fleury↑. (His paintings can be seen as the standard of art.) Sisley showed a beautiful impressionist painting↑.

Exhibited art-works by the ‘impressionist’:
29 of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions showed about 114! art-works at the Salon of 1870. Including  Astruc (14 aquarelles + 2 sculptures); Attendu (1x +1wc); Boudin (2x); Félix Bracquemond (4 engravings); Brandon (2x +16 aquarelles); Bureau (2x); Cals (2x); Cassatt (1x); Colin (2x); Debras (1x); Degas (1x +1 pastel); Latouche (2x); Legros (3 engravings); Lepic (2x +10dr +10 engravings); Lépine (1x); Meyer (8 enamels); Jean-Baptiste Millet (1x); Morisot (2x); de Nittis 2x +2dr); Auguste Ottin (1 sculpture); Léon Ottin (4 vitrail); Piette (2wc); Pissarro (2x); J.F. Exhibited art-works by other artists:
Here below you will find some art-works (mainly paintings) of some other artists that were exhibited at the Salon of 1870. You will find them by form and than in an alphabetical order. This will not give you an overall impression (that is outside the scope of this website). Namely works of pre-impressionist, para-impressionist and other related artitsts will be shown. Namely the following artists showed paintings: Courbet; Fantin-LatourManet;

Rejected art-works:
Two paintings of Monet were rejected in 1870. One he showed at the 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874 and the other at the 2nd ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1876.

 

Background information:
The art-works were divided in 7 sections:
1. painting; 2. drawings +watercolours +pastels +miniatures +enamels +porcelain +(cartons for) stained glass windows; 3. sculpture; 4. engravings on medals and gemstones; 5. architecture; 6. engravings; 7. lithographs.
(?) Per sections artists could send in 2 art-works.
In an appendix the paintings and sculptures executed since 1869 in public monuments were noted.

The jury:
1870/03/24 the admission and award jury was elected. There were 4 juries. One for section 1+2; one for 3+4; one for 5; one for 6+7. The overall jury consisted of Robert Fleury (academic painter; president*), Marquis de Chennevières (curator of the imperial musea; vice-president) and  M. Buon (inspecteur des Beaux-Arts; secretary).
Note*: in the years before Comte de Nieuwerkerke. had been the overall president; now this president was voted for.

In the painting section (+ drawing etc.) the following painters were elected (in order of the most votes): Daubigny*, Corot*, Bonnat**, Gérôme* (vice-president), Comte, Millet, Fromentin (secretary), Gleyre, Robert-Fleury* (president), Cabanel*, Pils*, Cabat*, Delaunay**, Meissonier* (vice-president), de Chennevièrs, Dubufe, Ziem and as reserve Chaplin*, Vollon*, Baudry**, Bida, Courbet, Brion.
Note: This year the jury consisted of 17 members (instead of the intended 18), of which 6 were member of L’Institut. Divergent from the years before there were no 6 additional members added from the Administration.
Note*: Daubigny and Corot did withdraw of the jury.
Note*: they were replaced by Chaplin and Vollon.

The awards:
The awards were distributed 1870/06/22ca.
There would be 2 Médaille d’Honneur worth 4.000fr, selected by a special commity. This year it was awarded to Tony Robert-Fleury and Ernest-Eugène Hiolle (statuaire).
Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911) (iR3):
S1870-2452, Le dernier jour de Corinthe↑ (M1; iR6; iR23)
40 artists received a medal for the section painting and drawings, etc., including Carolus-Duran, Cormon*, Detaille*, Fantin-Latour, Lefebvre*, Tony Robert-Fleury**; and the Dutch painter H-W Mesdag.
The 2 Médailles d’Honneur had a value of 4.000fr each; the other medals 400fr.

Note**: he (also) received the Medaille d’Honneur.

Légion d’Honneur:
There were 3 artists appointed as Officier in the Légion d’Honneur, namely Alexandre Bida, Philippe Rousseau, Aimé Millet (sculptor);  17 artists were appointed as Chevalier, including François Bonvin, John-Lewis Brown, Gustave Courbet, Lefebvre, Vollon.
