The Salon

1867

The Salon of 1867, short info:
The Salon of 1867 (the 85th) lasted from the 15th of April till the 5th of June and took place in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris (iR4;iR3). The catalogue mentions 2146 partakers and 2790 numbers (iR1). Note: in the same year (1867) their was an Exposition Universelle held.
The Médaille d’Honneur was awarded to Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (statuaire), so not a painter. Théodore Rousseau was appointed as Officier in the Légion d’Honneur; he had been president of the jury of this year Salon. The 40 medals for paintings were not divided in classes. So, this year there were no highly awarded paintings. Brandon also received a medal↑.

Exhibited art-works by the ‘impressionist’:
16 of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions showed about 23 art-works at the Salon of 1867. Boudin (2x); Félix Bracquemond (1x +1 engraving); Marie Bracquemond (1x); Brandon (2x +1wc +1dr); Bureau (1x); Cals (1x); Colin (1x); Edgard De Gas (=Degas; 2x); Legros (2x); Lepic (1dr);  Lépine (1x); Meyer (1 enamel); Morisot (1x); Léon Ottin (1x); Piette (1x); Redon (1 engraving). Brandon and Legros received a medal.
Note: Maybe a painting of Béliard was exhibited, but this was not in the catalogue.

Here below you will find some art-works (mainly paintings) of some other artists that were exhibited at the Salon of 1867. You will find them first by form and than in an alphabetical order. This will not give you an overall impression (that is outside the scope of this website). Namely works of pre-impressionist, para-impressionist and other related artitsts will be shown. Namely the following artists showed paintings: Bouguereau; Jongkind;

Rejected art-works:
The following artists were rejected for the Salon of 1867: Cézanne; Monet (2x); Pissarro; Renoir (1x); Sisley (1x).

Background information:
This Salon counted 6 sections: 1. paintings; 2. drawings, watercolours, pastels, miniatures, enamels, porcelain and cartons for stained glass (windows); 3. sculpture 4. ‘gravure en medailles et pierres fines’*; 5. architecture; 6. engravings; 7. lithographs. In an appendix the paintings and sculptures executed since 1866 in public monuments were noted. Artists were alowed to send in 2 art-works per section.

The jury:
There were 4 juries for section 1+2, 3+4, 5 and 6+7. The overall president was Comte de Nieuwerkerke. At every section of the jury there were 3 members attached, 2 artists with the most votes and 1 by the Administration.
The jury of the painting and drawing section consisted of 15 members; 2/3 part of the jury (10 members) was voted for, 1/3 was chosen by the ‘Administration’ (5 members)****.
Théodore Rousseau (President), Marquis Audré Maison*** (vice-president), Fromentin (secretary; 131); and as members: P.J.A. Baudry** (?), Bida (?), Breton (?),  Cabanel* (professeur à l’École des Beaux-Arts; ?), Maurice Cottier***Français** (?), Théophile Gautier*** (writer), Gérôme* (professeur à l’École des Beaux-Arts; ?), Louis Lagaze***,  Meissonier* (?), Pils** (professeur à l’École des Beaux-Arts; ?), Frédéric Reiset*** (curator of the Imperial musea).
The supplementary members Gustave Brion (?), Gleyre (vice-president; ?), Alfred Arago*** (inspecteur genéral des Beaux-Arts). This year they were explicitly added to the 15 members.
Those who could vote were artists that were part of L’Institut, the Légion d’Honneur and/or who had received an award.
Accepted without examination are the Members of L’Institut, those appointed in the Légion d’Honneur and awarded artists.

The awards:
