The Salon of 1866, short info:
The Salon of 1866 (the 84th) lasted from the 1st of May till the 20th of June and was held in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris (iR4;iR3). The catalogue mentions 2583 partakers and 3398 numbers (iR1).
The Médaille d’Honneur wasn’t awarded this year. No one was appointed as Officier (or higher) in the Légion d’Honneur. The 40 medals for paintings were not divided in classes. So, this year there were no highly awarded paintings.
On this page you will find short information on the Salon of 1866 and some of the pictures exhibited. First you will find art-works of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions. Exhibited art-works by the ‘impressionist’:
19 of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions showed about 37 art-works at the Salon of 1866. Boudin (2x); Félix Bracquemond (1x +2 engravings); Marie Bracquemond (1x); Brandon (2x +1wc +1dr); Bureau (2x); Cals (1x +2dr); Debras (1x +1dr); Edgar De Gas (=Degas; 1x); Latouche (1x); Lepic (1x); Lépine (2x); Meyer (2 enamels); Monet (2x); Morisot (2x); Auguste Ottin (4 sc); Léon Ottin (1x); Piette (1x); Pissarro (1x); Sisley (2x). 1 painting of Renoir was accepted, the other rejected; he then withdrew the accepted work↓↓.
Félix Bracquemond and Alfred Meyer both received a medal (for painting).
The art-works will be rendered by form, first the paintings, then other art-works and then alphabettically.

Here below you will find some art-works (mainly paintings) of some other artists that were exhibited at the Salon of 1866. You will find them in an alphabetical order. This will not give you an overall impression (that is outside the scope of this website). Namely works of pre-impressionist, para-impressionist and other related artitsts will be shown. Rejected art-works:
The following artists were rejected for the Salon of 1866: Cézanne (2x); Manet; Renoir (1x);

 

Accepted but withdrawn art-works:
One work of Renoir was rejected, the other accepted; Renoir then withdrew his accepted work. Here below you will find 2 uncertain options.

 

Background information:
This Salon counted 6 sections: 1. paintings; 2. drawings, watercolours, pastels, miniatures, enamels, porcelain and cartons for stained glass (windows); 3. sculpture and engraved medals; 4. architecture; 5. engravings; 6. lithographs. In an appendix the paintings and sculptures executed since 1865 in public monuments were noted. Artists were alowed to send in 2 art-works per section.

The jury:
There were 4 juries for section 1+2, 3, 4 and 5+6. The overall president was Comte de Nieuwerkerke. The jury of the painting and drawing section consisted of 24 members****; 3/4 part of the jury (18 members) was voted for, 1/4 was chosen by the ‘Administration’ (6 members).

The supplementary members L.G.E. Isabey (58), Auguste de Lajolais (55), Théodore Rousseau (49), Alfred Arago*** (inspecteur genéral des Beaux-Arts). This year they were not part of the total amount of members.
Those who could vote were artists that were part of L’Institut, the Légion d’Honneur and/or who had received an award.

The awards:
The Médaille d’Honneur wasn’t  awarded this year.
40 artists received a medal for the section painting and drawings, etc., including Félix Bracquemond, Émile-Adelard Breton, John-Lewis Brown, Carolus Duran, Harpignies, Henner, Alfred Meyer, James Tissot.

Légion d’Honneur:
There were 9 people appointed as Chevalier in the Légion d’Honneur, including 4 painters
