The Salon of 1864, short info:
The Salon of 1864 (the 82th) lasted from the 1st of May till the 15th of June and took place in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris (iR4;iR3). The catalogue mentions 2609 partakers and 3523 numbers (iR1). Another source mentions that 2.081 artists showed 3.074 art-works, including 1.969 paintings (R337/1864).
The Médaille d’Honneur was awarded not to a painter. 40 painters received a medal, but this was not divided into classes. So, there were no highly awarded paintings. 3 persons were appointed as Officier in the Légion d’Honneur, including Cabanel.

Of the 4.228 entries 3.074 were exhibited and 1.154 (27%) were rejected. Of the 2.777 paintings 1969 were exhibited and 808 (29%) rejected. (R337/1864).
Boine mentions in his article that in 1864 30% of the works were rejected and that these works were added in the official catalogue under ‘Ouvrages non admis au concours des récompenses’ (R287,p416+425; Eng.: works not admitted to the awards competition). Better known as the Salon des Refusées. And indeed an Auguste Roosmalen exhibited two works as such and of Léon Ottin one work was in the normal catalogue and another number not (iR1;R287,p419+420). It was organised in the adjacent rooms of the Salon, where 286 artists, exhibited 375 art-works, including 282 paintings. It received hardly attention. (R88).
