historical, biblical and mythological themes

Introduction:
On this page you will find some academic paintings. They will be rendered alphabetically and then chronologically.
See link for an overview of the academic painters, that were member of L’Institut.
On this page you will find the paintings they made with historical, biblical and mythological themes (and also scenes from literature).
Other works of them will be shown on the page with meta-impressionist paintings.
See links for more info and pictures on Léon Bonnat; Bouguereau; Cabanel; Cabat; David; Delacroix; Gérôme; Ingres; Meissonier; Horace Vernet.
It is interesting to compare them with those of the Impressionists. It is interesting to see if these ‘para-impressionists’ used elements of the impressionist painting style and in what way they did differ from it.
If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow.
