Jules Bastien-Lepage

Introduction:
Jules Bastien-Lepage was born 1848/11/01 in Damvillers (Mense). He died 1884/12/10 at the age of 36.

Bastien-Lepage as an artist:
Started in 1867 his study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Pupil of Cabanel. Reached at the Prix de Rome in 1875 a second place.
He is mainly seen (1878 onwards) as Naturalist. He was influenced by Courbet and Millet. He was famous for his peasant scenes, with large figures in a landscape. His many portraits are painted quite expressive. His colours are consistently subdued, his brushstroke smooth and he rendered selective details.
Bastien-Lepage depicted also some mythological and religious themes.

 

Bastien-Lepage at the Salon:
Debut at the Salon of 1870. Received at the Salon of 1874 a 3rd class medal (Portrait of my grand father) and in 1875 a second class medal (first communion).

Bastien-Lepage at the Exposition Universelle:
At the Exposition Universelle of 1878 he received a 3rd class medal.
Also there were works of him shown at the Centennial Exhibition of the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and in 1900.

 

Bastien-Lepage, an honoured artist:
He was appointed in the Légion d’Honneur in 1879 as Chevalier.
In 1883 he was awarded in the Belgium Orde of Leopold as Chevalier (knight).
Posthumous there had been an exhibition at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (1885 March and April).

 

Bastien-Lepage, posthumous sales and exhibitions:
1885/05/11+12 there had been an auction sale at Hôtel Drouot (or Georges Petit).
Posthumously there were works of him shown at the Centennial Exhibition of the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and in 1900.
