The Salon of 1865, short info: The Salon of 1865 (the 83th) lasted from the 1st of May till the 20th of June and was held in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris (iR4;iR3). The catalogue mentions 2744 partakers and 3605 numbers (iR1); or 3554 numbers excluding the public monuments. Boulanger was appointed in the Légion d’Honneur as Officier. The Médaille d’Honneur was awarded to Cabanel↑ and to Paul Dubois (statuaire). These paintings can be seen as the standard of art.

Background information: This Salon counted 6 sections: 1. paintings; 2. drawings, watercolours, pastels, miniatures, enamels, porcelain and cartons for stained glass (windows); 3. sculpture and engraved medals; 4. architecture*; 5. engravings*; 6. lithographs*. Note*: The order of the sections have been changed compared to last year. In an appendix the paintings and sculptures executed since 1864 in public monuments were noted.
The jury: There were 4 juries for section 1+2, 3, 4 and 5+6. The overall president was Comte de Nieuwerkerke. The jury of the painting and drawing section consisted of 16 members; 3/4 part of the jury (12 members) was voted for, 1/4 was chosen by the ‘Adminstration’ (4 members): Robert-Fleury* (president; 137 votes), Théophile Gautier (writer; vice-president); and as members: Bida (102), Cabanel* (167), Corot (119), Adrien Dauzats (49), Français** (75), Fromentin (87), Gérôme** (141), Audré Maison (from the Administration), Pils** (145), Frédéric Reiset (curator of the Imperial musea); and as supplementary members Cogniet* (43), Gleyre (41), Louis Lagaze (from the Administration), Meissonier* (44).
