Jo Koster (1868-1944):
Johanna Petronella Catharina Antoinetta Koster was born 1868/04/16 in Kampen. In 1881 she moved to Dordrecht. 1885/12 she left for Amsterdam to study at a drawing school. 1888 she followed her studies in Rotterdam, 1894 in Paris, 1894-97 in Brussels / Schaarbeek (Blanc-Garin).
In Holland Jo Koster would namely paint in the surroundings of Laren (1899+), Staphorst (1900+), Hattem (1901+), Heeze (1916), Giethoorn, Hasselt (1917), Heelsum (1933+). From 1910 till early 1924 she would live in ‘Het Honk’ in Hattem; she began to sign her works with ‘Jo Koster (van Hattem)’ (R566,p112). From 1934-42 she lived in the Hague.
Jo Koster often painted en-plein-air in a sort of Naturalistic style. She often painted farmers. Since 1904 she was inspired by Henk P. Bremmer (1871-1965). She also was inspired by Van Gogh, Jan Toorop, Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig en Jan Sluijters. From about 1911 till 1921 Jo Koster namely used a neo-impressionist painting style*. The colours blue and purple became eminant. One review (1919/02/24) recalled: “Jo Koster is the painter of joyfull colours.” and another 1920/06/05: “This painter usually works with small brushstrokes of unmixed or only slightly mixed colour, which she places side by side (somewhat in the manner of the Pointillists, but broader and with more variety in technique); in this way, she manages to achieve a good interplay of colours, with a touch of light and life in them.” (R566,p170) Another review (1923/01/27) mentioned: “Maybe Jo Koster is the last of the Divisionists.” (R566,p173)
Jo Koster also was a great portraitist↓.
Jo Koster is known for making many travels, namely to Italy, Brittany (1927-1929) and Mallorca (1931-1933).
Jo Koster took part in many exhibitions in Holland. In 1898 she joined La Libre Esthetique in Brussels with 4 works: Dans les amaranthes; En Gueldre; Au soleil; Le Silence des Bois (R566,p53). Early 1914 she exhibited at the Walker Galleries in London with 11 paintings, 20 aquarelles, 4 drawings, 1 lithograph and some portraits (R566,p115).
Jo Koster sometimes copied paintings of other artists. After Derain (M62) she made a portrait of Matisse (iR6; iR17); I wonder where she ever had seen this painting; it was owned by Matisse (till 1958) and first exhibited in 1960.
Some works are (probably) wrongly attributed to Jo Koster: a beach scene dated ’90 with an unknown monogram (iR17); the beach suits are quite modern and the painting style doesn’t fit the one of Jo Koster in 1890.
1944/04/15 Jo Koster died in Heelsum.
