Sisley solo expo 1897

Impressionism, a historical reconstruction:

Alfred Sisley

(1839-1899)

solo expo 1897

at Georges Petit

Introduction:
In 1897 from the 5th till the 28th of February the art-dealer Georges Petit held a large solo exhibition in his gallery in Paris, called A. Sisley (=GP1897). It included 146 paintings and 5 pastels made by Alfred Sisley. None of the works were sold (R53,p142). Many works were loans.
These works were made throughout the years, so it renders a nice overview of the themes Sisley depicted. It also gives an inside in the development of his style, which you can compare with the impressionist painting style. I therefore will render the pictures by year they were made by Sisley (but firstly by medium and form).
On this page you will find 83 of the exhibited works (see for an account at the bottom of this page). If you double click on the first (of a cluster of) pictures and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!
Note: the low horizon Sisley often used.

Pastels:
Apart from the 146 paintings, there were also 5 pastels shown, all from private collections. I render two uncertain options. See below for an account.

Earlier solo expositions:
Earlier there had been solo expositions of paintings of Alfred Sisley in 1881 at La Vie Moderne, in 1883 at Durand-Ruel and December 1888 at Georges Petit. See also the overview of expositions.

Overview:
Many works shown were loans and many were dated, this makes identification a bit more certain. Still, Sisley often repeated several themes, so identification of many exhibited paintings is still unclear. (Almost) certain is that the following 73 paintings of were shown:
