Delacroix (1798-1863): 1830-31, Liberty guiding the people, 260×325, Louvre (iR2;iR1;R12,p437;R172,p61;R13,p174;R293,p328;R231) =S1831-511, Le 28 juillet. La liberté guidant le peuple; =EU=S1855-2926 + =EU-C-1889-258
Introduction: The Salons in the 1830s were held (almost) yearly in the Louvre, called the ‘Musée royal des arts’. Since 1831 the jury of the Salon was dominated by members of ‘L’Institut‘.
In July 1830 a revolution took place (iR3), after which 1830/08/02 king Charles X (iR3) abdicted. Louis Philippe I, from the house of Orléans, became the new king (iR3). This revolution was depicted by Delacroix↑ and exhibited in 1831. (see political developments)
Between 1830 and 1848 1/3 of the exhibited works were landscapes (R290,p54+65). These titles of landscapes often render an indication of the location and more than once also of atmospheric conditions, like ‘un soir d’automne’, ‘effet de matin’ and ’temps gris’. This suggests a painting style with (Pre-)Impressionist tendencies.
In 1834 Ingres received many accusations of historical inaccuracy, for the feminine appearance of the Saint, who looked like a beautiful statue. In anger, Ingres announced that he would no longer participate in the Salon. In 1834 Rousseau received a 3rd class medal (Paysage), but he was refused in 1836 + 1837 + 1838 (R290,p54;R59;iR1). After that he stopped submitting (since 1841) and was supported by his friends who also stopped submitting.
On this page you will find some exhibited art-works (in a chronological and alphabetical way) and an overview from year till year.
