Purchases by the State

and assignments

a sign of recognition

Purchases and assignments by the State:
Another form of award and recognition was when a work exhibited at the Salon or at the Exposition Universelle, afterwards was bought by the State (or the Emperor till 1870). Mostly, later on it would be displayed in one of the French musea.

Another award was when an artist, after success at the Salon, was assigned by the State to make an art-work, for example a mural for a public building.

Some of the art-works of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions also were purchased or assigned, namely Boudin, Félix Bracquemond, Colin, Degas, Morisot, de Nittis, Auguste Ottin, Lucien Pissarro and Renoir. See seperate page.

Note: in the future you will find names of artists and purchased or assigned works on this page.
I hope it will become clear what kind of works were purchased and assigned. Were this only Néo-Classical works or also impressionist paintings?
