On this page you will find short information on the Salon of 1859 and some of the pictures exhibited. First you will find highly awarded paintings. The Salon of 1859, short info:
The Salon of 1859 (the 79th?) took place from the 15th of April till the 15th of June in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris (iR4;iR3). The catalogue mentions 1795 (or 2033) partakers and 3692 (or 3894 or 3972 numbers (iR1; R337).

 

Highly awarded art-works:
Müller was appointed Officier in the Légion d’Honneur.
There was no Médaille d’Honneur distributed.
1st class medal (rappel) (4x): (Charles) Fortin; Daubigny; (Louis) Knaus; (Louis) Bézard).
1st class medal (3x): Breton; (Eugène) Fromentin; (Armand) Leleux.
These highly awarded paintings can be seen as the standard of art.

 

Exhibited art-works by the ‘impressionist’:
12 of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions showed about 20 art-works at the Salon of 1859. Including the following  partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions: Boudin (1x); Félix Bracquemond (1 engraving); Mlle Antonine-Marie Pasquioux (=Marie Bracquemond; 1x); Cals (3x); Colin (2x); Debras (4x); Legros (1x); Lépine (1x); Auguste Ottin (4 photographs +1sc); Piette (2x); Pissarro (1x); Tillot (3x). The art-works will be rendered by form, first the paintings, then other art-works and then alphabettically.

 

 

Exhibited art-works by other artists:
Here below you will find some art-works (mainly paintings) of some other artists that were exhibited at the Salon of 1859. You will find them by form and than in an alphabetical order. This will not give you an overall impression (that is outside the scope of this website). Namely works of pre-impressionist, para-impressionist and other related artitsts will be shown. Namely the following artists showed paintings: Bouguereau, Corot, Daubigny, Gérôme, Jongkind, Troyon.
Some received an award: Boulanger (2nd class medal rappel); Delaunay (3rd class medal).

Background information:
This Salon counted 6 sections: 1. Peinture (paintings, drawings, watercolours, pastels, miniatures, enamels, porcelain); 2. sculpture and engraved medals; 3. engravings; 4. lithographs; 5. architecture; 6. works executed since 1857 in public monuments.

Légion d’Honneur:
Müller was appointed Officier in the Légion d’Honneur. 19 artists were appointed Chevalier, including: Bouguereau; Daubigny; Lefèvre (R337/1861).

The jury:
The jury for the painting section consisted of the 14 members of L’Institut: Abel de Pujol, Alaux,  Brascassat, Cogniet, Couder, Delacroix, Flandrin, Heim, Hersent, Ingres, Picot, Robert-Fleury, Schnetz, Vernet (see Academic painters). President of the jury was Comte de Nieuwerkerke, Directeur général des Musées Impériaux.

The awards:
There was no Médaille d’Honneur distributed.

2nd class medal (rappel) (12x), including Boulanger; 2nd class medal (6x);
