Impressionism, locations
where the ‘impressionists’ did paint:
Veneux-les-Sablons
a topographical overview
Introduction:
Alfred Sisley made many landscapes and riverviews in Veneux-les-Sablons. In 1880* Sisley had moved to Veneux-Nadon, 88, Route de By (now: (88) Rue Victor Hugo, Veneux-les-Sablons), which lies just south of Thomery. September 1882 he moved to Moret-sur-Loing, where he stayed one year. October 1883 he moved back to (Veneux-)Les Sablons. In 1886 Sisley moved to 32, route Nationale, Veneux-Nadon (now: 35, Avenue de Fontainebleau), opposite the train station, more south in the direction of Moret-sur-Loing. November 1889 Sisley moved again to Moret-sur-Loing.
Sisley also depicted surrounding villages like to the north Thomery (namely the hamlet By), north-east at the other bank of the Seine Champagne-sur-Seine and the eastern edges of the Fontainebleau forest.
See also the pages on Moret-sur-Loing (to the south) and on Saint-Mammès (to the east at the opposite bank of the Loing Canal).
Note*: or in 1879 (R38;R7,p153).
Thomery:
Thomery lies north of Veneux-les-Sablons. Alfred Sisley sometimes painted here.
Thomery / By:
By is a hamlet in the south part of Thomery. The location is not quite clear. There is a bus station called By, there is a Chemin de By (south-west of it) and a Rue de By (north-east of it). Alfred Sisley namely depicted the paths along the Seine, this is more to the east, namely the woods at Roches-Courtant (compare Chemin de Roches-Courtant)*. Some works** are called ‘Chemin de By’, which clearly leads along the Seine, so maybe in the past the Chemin de Roches-Courtant was partly called Chemin de By. Some works depicted the Chemin des Petits-Prés in By***.
Note*: in the following works (the woods of) Roches-Courtant are depicted: CCPP398 +399 +400 +450 +452 +453 +455 +477 +553.
Note**: in the following works the Chemin de By is depicted: CCPP450 +451.
Note***: in the following works the (Chemin des) Petits-Prés à By is depicted: CCPP394 +397 +458.
Champagne-sur-Seine:
North-east at the other bank of the Seine lies Champagne-sur-Seine. Here Alfred Sisley namely depicted washerwomen.
See also CCPP687.
Veneux-Nadon:
Alfred Sisley first in 1880 lived in Veneux-Nadon, 88, Route de By (now: (88) Rue Victor Hugo, Veneux-les-Sablons), just south of Thomery.
Les Sablons:
Alfred Sisley later (October 1883) moved to Les Sablons, probably a more southern part of Veneux-Les Sablons.
See CCPP516 onwards.
1885/06/12 the painter Guillemet visited him (see correspondence).
Note: pictures will follow.
Veneux-Nadon 2:
In 1886 Alfred Sisley moved to 32, route Nationale, Veneux-Nadon (now: 35, Avenue de Fontainebleau), opposite the train station, more south in the direction of Moret-sur-Loing.
Note: pictures will follow.
