Impressionism, locations
where the ‘impressionists’ did paint:
Moret-sur-Loing
a topographical overview
Introduction:
Alfred Sisley made many landscapes and riverviews in Moret-sur-Loing. Sisley lived here a year from September 1882 till October 1883 (R166,p268/9). Later in November 1889 Sisley moved to 19, Rue Montmartre, Moret-sur-Loing. Gale states that Sisley moved to another house in Moret in 1894 (R53,p142). Still, in a letter 1889/10/09 Sisley writes he wants to ‘move to the Rue de l’Eglise in Moret-sur-Loing (R166,p47+53,note91). 1899/01/29 Sisley died in Moret and the first of February he was burried at the local cemetery (R166,p291).
West of Moret lies the Fontainebleau forest. North of Moret lies Veneux-les-Sablons (where Sisley also lived). North-east at the other side of the Loing Canal lies Saint-Mammès. (Note: Part of Moret lies at the east bank of the Loing Canal, south of Saint-Mammès.)
Moret lies about 80km south-east of Paris and is part of the region Ile-de-France.
In 1901 +1902 Pissarro also spend some time in Moret.
The surroundings of where Sisley lived:
See CCPP893 +894 depicting his garden. Nearby he depicted the Rue de la Tannerie (CCPP889 + 890) and the Rue des Fossés (CCPP891 + 892).
View on Moret from the right / east bank:
Alfred Sisley often depicted Moret-sur-Loing from the right / east bank of the Loing Canal.
Several times he depicted the boatyard of Matrat*.

View on the bridge of Moret from the east bank:
Alfred Sisley often depicted the bridge of Moret-sur-Loing from the east bank of the Loing Canal, in a sort of serie. Sisley painted during several times of day, several seasons and several weather conditions. At the other bank the Porte de Bourgogne often was depicted. And at the upstream-side he depicted the watermills.
The (old) church of Moret:
Alfred Sisley made a serie of paintings of the (old) church of Moret-sur-Loing, the Notre-Dame de la Nativité (iR9). He did so during several times of day, several seasons and several weather conditions. Sisley lived a few minutes walk at 19, Rue Montmartre. (See CCPP928-940)
The river Orvanne:
Alfred Sisley also depicted the river Orvanne that flows in the river Loing / the Loing canal in front of Moret-sur-Loing (see CCPP882/3).
See also CCPP823 onwards.
At the edge of the Fontainebleau forest:
In the 1860s Alfred Sisley had painted in the Fontainebleau forest, but mostly in the western part. When he lived in Moret-sur-Loing and also in Veneux-les-Sablons, he often depicted the eastern edges of the Fontainebleau forest.
