Sisley: expos Durand-Ruel

Impressionism, a historical reconstruction:

Alfred Sisley

(1839-1899)

expos by Durand-Ruel

an overview of titles

Introduction:
A shallow view on the expositions in which Alfred Sisley participated, will give the impression that he did so quite often. But, a closer look reveals that most of these expositions were arranged by Durand-Ruel. Firstly in the sense that he organised them himself in his galleries in London (1870-75), Paris and New York (1888 onwards). And secondly in the sense that he did loan paintings from his stock* to regional, international (“impressionist”) and other expositions. Including to the ‘impressionist’ expositions in Paris in 1874 +1876 +1882**.

On this page you will find an overview of the titles from these expositions. I will render these titles in a topographical and thematical way. This will reveal that several titles are (quite) the same. I hope this will help in the identification of these exhibited paintings. When possible I will render the original titles from the catalogues (in bold). An indication of location will be indicated in blue and an indication of atmospherical conditions in pink (these are typical for an impressionist painting style). Sometimes I will render titles from indirect sources. When possible I will also render a suggestion which work from the Catalogue Critique des Peintures et des Pastels (=CCPP) was exhibited (=R396). I also render the titles from the HD1875/03/24 auction of the paintings bought by Durand-Ruel (iR40).

Note*: Durand-Ruel purchased directly or indirectly about 37% of all the paintings of Sisley (R396). But, it is also possible that he send in pictures that Sisley had hosted in his gallery, but weren’t purchased (yet).
Note**: Many sources assume that Durand-Ruel did send in all the 27 paintings of Sisley that were shown. I plead for the option that some paintings came from the studio of Sisley himself. To the 1877 expo Durand-Ruel didn’t loan any painting.

Louveciennes:
Alfred Sisley lived in Louveciennes (the hamlet Voisins) from about 1871 till about 1875.

Marly-le-Roi:
Early 1875 Alfred Sisley moved to 2, Avenue de l’Abreuvoir in Marly-le-Roy, looking out over the watering place, which he often painted (see series). This ‘Abreuvoir’ formerly was part of the waterworks providing the Château de Marly with water (including the Machine de Marly). Stevens mentions Sisley moved to Marly in the winter of 1874/75 (R166,p102).

Argenteuil:
In 1872 Alfred Sisley visited Monet in Argenteuil and painted there. He would visit Monet again October 1874 (R53,p141). I haven’t found (yet) paintings made here and exhibited by Durand Ruel.

Villeneuve-la-Garenne + surroundings:
In the spring and summer Alfred Sisley painted in Villeneuve-la-Garenne, a little north of Argenteuil.

Poissy:
Some paintings of Alfred Sisley are said to have been made in Poissy. But Daulte in his Catalogue Raisonné doesn’t render one single painting made in Poissy (R129,p346), so I assume this is a mistake.

Sèvres:
October 1878 Alfred Sisley moved to Sèvres, 12km west of Paris. His address was 7, Avenue de Bellevue, but this is only found in close by Boulogne-Billancourt, about 10km west of Paris. (Other sources mention he did move in March, others 1877 (R38) and others 1875 (R7,p153). In April 1879 Sisley moved to 164, Grand-Rue, Sèvres. I haven’t found (yet) paintings made here and exhibited by Durand Ruel.

In 1872 Alfred Sisley also painted in the surroundings of Paris.

Account:
I used original catalogues which I found on archive.org (=iR19), on gallica.bnf (=iR40) and at the RKD (=iR24). For the titles of the ‘impressionist’ expositions I used Moffett (1986=R2). I also used titles given in Stevens (1992=R166), namely in notes (p51-53 + p72+73) and the Appendix II (p.69-70), mostly profided by Caroline Durand-Ruel Godfroy. Also see the overview of expositions of Sisley.
For the contemporary titles and work I refer to the Catalogue Critique des Peintures et des Pastels (=CCPP) of Brame &Lorenceau (2021=R396). Sometimes I also refer to the Catalogue Raisonné (=CR) of Daulte (1959=R129). Sometimes I render to a page of a museum (=M) or of an auction house, namely of Christies (=iR15) and Sotheby’s (=iR14). I also use information rendered by Gale (R53,p140-142). See for other sources at the bottom of the main page on Alfred Sisley.
For the given suggestions I use the suggestions given by Moffett (1986=R2), Berson (1996=R90), the CCPP (2021=R396), Stevens (1992=R166). The suggestions given by myself are indicated with (HW). See the account for the given suggestions and more info.
See links for practical hints and abbreviations and for the subscription of the paintings. See links for other general references (=R), internet sites (=iR) and musea (=M). For other additional references (=aR) see below.
