Introduction:
This page gives some short information and some pictures on the Salon d’Automne of 1905. It is famous because several artists who exhibited in room VII were baptized Les Fauves. There also were retrospectives held of Ingres and Edouard Manet. Several partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions also were present.

1905, Salon d’Automne, general info:
The 3rd exhibition in 1905 was held from the 18th of October till the 25th of November and was held in the Grand Palais. The exhibition knew 6 sections: painting; sculpture; decorative art; drawing; engraving and architecture. The catalogue renders 1636 numbers* and seperately the numbers of the retrospectives on of works of Ingres (68 numbers*) and Edouard Manet (31 numbers). There also was an exhibition of books, music, bookbinding and of drawings by d’Outamaro (iR19). Not in the catalogue is the exposition of works of Georges-Léopold Mita (iR4). The Salon database mentions 657 partakers showing 1844 entries (iR1). DoME (being incomplete) mentions 452 participants showing 1790 works (aR3). The art-works were displayed in 18 rooms.
Presidents of honor were Renoir and Eugène Carrière. Guillaumin was president of the painting section.

Room VII: Les Fauves:
In room VII the following artists were displayed: Camoin (5 paintings ), Derain (5 +4 pastels), Manquin (5), Marquet (5), Matisse (8 +2 aquarelles) and de Vlaminck (5), and also of Pierre Girieud* (5 still lifes), Ramon Pichot* (5 Spanish scenes), Jelka Rosen* (4) (iR4). In the middle of this room stood two traditional sculptures of Albert Marque**: a marble female buste and a bronze torso of a child (R533,p14). The art-critic Louis Vauxcelles marked in his review (Gil Blas 1905/10/17): “The innocence of these busts surprises among this orgy of pure tones; Donatello among les fauves…” In this review, in which he alternates between critic and appraisel, he calls them ‘Vuillard and his friends’. He compares the works of Matisse with a christian virgin delivered to the wild animals in the circus (of ancient Rome). ‘He asks of Pontillism more vibration and brightness’. (iR40)

Retrospective Ingres:
There was a retrospective held with art-works of Ingres (1780-1867). The catalogue renders 68 numbers, but in fact many numbers included more than one art-work. It included (just) 23 paintings. Central was the oriental scene Le Bain de Turc (no.1; iR6; M5). Additionaly many studies were shown for Le Bain du Turc (2-11), each number containing various studies. There were 11 other studies shown (nos. 13 +14 +24 +31-34 +43 +47 +55 +67) and 19 drawings* . Also 19 portraits** were shown (including studies and drawings). So, Ingres is represented as an orientalist, a draftsman and a portraitist. There were 9 mythological themes, 3 religious themes and 4 historical themes shown***. (including studies and drawings). So, Ingres is just partly presented as a Neo-Classical painter. There also was 1 lithograph shown (no.66) and one copy (68).

There was a retrospective held with art-works of Edouard Manet (1832-83). 31 art-works were shown; 19 made in the studio (1-19), 6 made en-plein-air (20-25), 5 pastels (26-30) and 1 drawing (31). 5 works earlier were shown at the Salon. 9 works were portraits.
