The Exposition Centennale of 1900

A universal recognition for the impressionists

An alphabetical overview

General info:
The Centennial Exposition, the Exposition Centennale de l’Art Français (1800-1889), alongside the Exposition Universelle in 1900 in Paris represent high regarded art-works of the last centennial* (=EU-1900-C) and can be seen as a universal recognition for a French artist.
In total there were about 672 oil paintings exhibited, 686 drawings (+pastels + watercolours), 734 sorts of sculptures, 526 sorts of engravings and 448 other art-works, so a total of about 3066 art-works.
There were 272 painters of which about 682** paintings were shown, this makes an average of 2,5 paintings per artist. Just 11 painters more than 10 paintings were shown: Corot (24), Daumier (18), Ingres (17), Delacroix (16), Monet (14), Daubigny (13), Manet (13), Renoir (11), David (10+4), Dupré (10), Prud’hon (10). Of 19 more 5 till 9 paintings were shown: Chassériau (9), Rousseau (9), Courbet (8), Diaz (8), Pissarro (8), Ricard (8), Sisley (8), Gros (7), Bastien-Lepage (6), Baudry (6), Fantin-Latour (6), (Louis-Eugène) Lami (6), (J.F.) Millet (6), Monticelli (6), Tassaert (6), Chintreuil (5), Drölling (5), Géricault (5), Moreau (5). So, we see that Impressionists and related painters are more extensively represented than Academic painters. In total 28 of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions showed 73 paintings (>10%!) and 40 other art-works.
Arsène Alexandre talked about a a dazzling venue of Impressionists (Le Figaro 1900/05/01), see for more information on the general page. Mellerio wrote ’they received their well-deserved coronation’ (R380,p15+19+21). Monneret wrote: “this Exhibition … revealed for the first time to the general public the charm and splendour of Impressionism.” (R88II,p258) So, after years of neglection and criticism, they now received universal recognition.
Already in 1894 a committee started the preparations. Among the members were art-collectors including Henri Rouart.
On this page you will first find suggestions for most of the art-works shown by the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions, first the paintings, then the other art-works. Then you will find 135 art-works (namely paintings) of other artists, with special attention for pre-impressionists and para-impressionists. The works will be shown in an alphabetical order. On seperate pages you will find a chronological order of the paintings that were exhibited at the ‘Exposition Centennale de l’Art Français (1800-1889)’ and more background information (from the catalogue).
Note*: this represents the last 90 years, but in fact this period is longer, see also the chronological order of the paintings.
Note**: the catalogue renders 672 numbers of paintings, but some numbers are left out and some number have a ‘bis’ or even a ’ter’ version. Some numbers included more than one paintings (often several studies), I count them as 1 painting.
Enjoy!

Paintings of the ‘impressionists’ at the Exposition Centennale:
At the Centennial exhibition of the Exposition Universelle in 1900 28 of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions received a universal recognition. Of 20 of the 57 partakers in total 73 paintings were shown 48 paintings were landscapes, 20 figure paintings and portraits and 5 depicted other themes. So, of the total of 672 oil paintings exhibited almost 11% were of the ‘impressionists’.
Of Boudin* (3x); Bureau* (1x); Cals* (3x); Cézanne (3x); Colin (2x); Degas (2x); Gauguin (1x); Guillaumin (1x); Lebourg (3x); Legros (2x); Lépine* (3x); Monet (14x!); Morisot* (3x); Pissarro (8x**); J.F. Raffaëlli (2x); Renoir (11x!); Seurat* (1x); Sisley* (8x); Tillot (1x); Vignon (1x).
Renoir first refused to exhibit (R31,p308).
Note: Most paintings were loans. Among the loaners were other partakers: Henri Rouart (and his brother Alexis) and Emile Schuffenecker. Important other lenders were Dr. Viau; Ernest May; Donop de Monchy; Pellerin. Some works were send in from musea. A single work was send in by the artist himself or by it’s widow.
Note: some suggestions are uncertain or even just to compare; sometimes I render two options, see also the accounts of the partakers (in the left or bottom menu).
Note: If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!
Note*: these paintings were shown posthumously.
Note**: the illustrated catalogue added number 522bis (R231-2).

Other art-works of the ‘impressionists’ at the Exposition Centennale:
Of 15 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions also 39+1hc other art-works were shown at the Centennial exhibition of the Exposition Universelle in 1900.
Of Félix Bracquemond (2 pastels (1 hc), 5 engravings, 1 lithograph); Brandon* (2 ‘dessins’**); Cals* (1 drawing); Degas (5 pastels); Desboutin (3 engravings); Forain (1 aquarelle); Gauguin (4 art objects***); Legros (3 drawings + 1 aquarelle); Meyer (2 enamels); Morisot* (1 aquarelle); Piette* (1 aquarelle + 1 gouache); Pissarro (1 ‘dessin’**); Redon (1 ‘dessin’** + 3 lithographs); Renoir (1 ‘dessin’**); Rouart (1 aquarelle).
These works were catagorised in several groups, namely: II Dessins; IV Sculptures; VII Gravure au burin et à l’eau-forte; VIII Lithographie; X Objets d’art, see background info.
Note: several suggestions are uncertain or even just to compare; sometimes I render two options, see also the accounts of the partakers (in the left or bottom menu).
Note: of 8 partakers there were no paintings shown.
Note: most works were loans (except the engravings).
Note: If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!
Note*: these art-works were shown posthumously.
Note**: the catalogue doesn’t indicate what sort of ‘dessin’ this was, so it could be a drawing, pastel or aquarelle.
Note***: one source claims that Gauguin showed 1 landscape and 10 large monotypes (via Vollard) (R49,p92), but this is not affirmed by the catalogues.

Art-works of other artists at the Exposition Centennale:
I will render several art-works (mainly paintings) of several other artists that were exhibited at the Centennial exhibition in 1900. I will do so in alphabetical order, which also is the catalogue order. This will give you quite an impression of this exhibition. Namely works of pre-impressionist, para-impressionist, academic painters and other related artitsts will be shown. On a seperate page you will find a chronological order of these paintings shown at the .
Note: If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!

Other paintings exhibited at the Exposition Centennale:
On this page (and the page that renders a chronological overview) you find more than 200 pictures of the about 682 paintings that were exhibited at the Centennial exhibition in 1900. It is beyond the scope of this website to render all the identified paintings of which several (57) are depicted in the Catalogue illustré (R231-2). (I namely leave out classical paintings and portraits.) I will mention more than 100 them here below and will link to an external website, so you may get a more complete impression of the works exhibited. Still, many exhibited paintings remain unidentified.
