Introduction:

Many sources on Impressionism oppose their painting style to Neo-Classicism.

But it is far more interesting to compare them with the Pre-Impressionists, like Corot, Courbet and Jongkind.

It is even more interesting to compare them with artists who painted and exhibited and the same time as the ‘impressionists’.

I call these artists para-impressionists. Important para-impressionists are Manet and Bazille.

Sometimes these artists can be catagorised in art-movements like Realism and Naturalism.

But often it is more hard to catagorise them.

Comparing the painting style of the para-impressionists with the impressionist painting style, helps us to define the impressionist painting style more than to compare it with Neo-Classicism.
