where the ‘impressionists’ did paint:
Antibes
along the Mediterranean coast
Introduction:
Antibes lies along the Mediterranean coast (=the Midi). Many artists did work here, including Claude Monet, Boudin, Rouart, Signac, Harpignies and Meissonnier. It is interesting to compare their painting styles and to discern the elements of the impressionist painting style.

Monet in Antibes (1888):
Claude Monet stayed in Antibes (iR486; iR9) from mid January 1888 until early May. He stayed in the Château de la Pinède (iR9). (R22,CR1158) In his paintings he depicted the Bastion Saint-André (iR4; iR9), the Château Grimaldi (iR3; iR9), the Salis Gardens, the bay and in the distance the Alps between France and Italy. He also depicted the surroundings, like Juan-les-Pins (iR486; iR9).
Monet painted the following works in Antibes: CR1084-1193 (R22; iR3+iR182/III).
Many of these paintings were shown at the large exhibition ‘Monet-Rodin’ at Georges Petit in 1889.
10 of them had been shown at Boussod, Valadon et Cie in 1888. (R22IV,p1017)
Signac and Antibes:
Paul Signac often painted in Antibes. Since 1892 he had lived in Saint-Tropez about 70km south-west (iR9). September 1913 he moved with his pregnant companion, Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange to a villa in Cap d’Antibes (R39,p52+313). In the following years he would divide his time between Antibes and Saint-Tropez (where his wife still lived).
He depicted Antibes in 1903 (CR390-395), 1909 (CR479 +486 +487), 1911 (CR490), 1913 (CR499), 1914 (CR500-504), 1916 (CR507-511), 1917 (CR513-516), 1918 (CR520 +521), 1919 (CR532-536).
In 1918/19 he made a serie of small studies on wood (CR522-531; R39,nos136-143).
He also depicted Antibes in watercolours (R39,p28,fig.23).
Boudin and Antibes:
Eugène Boudin first visited the Midi in 1885, from which time he spent there for health reasons (R419,p136).
In 1893 he made many paintings in Antibes (R122,pCVII,CR3069-3117).

Rouart and Antibes:
Henri Rouart showed at the 6th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1881 four paintings depicting Antibes (and surroundings). None of these works are identified, still the compilations here below will give you some impression; they also show works (of other artists) that depict Antibes.
