Pourville introduction: Dieppe lies 83km north/east of Le Havre in the Normandy region (iR9; iR468). Two kilometers to the south-west lies Pourville (iR468; iR9) and another two kilometers south-west lies Varengeville (iR468; iR9). Claude Monet made many pictures here in 1882 (CR707-746 +551-808); he returned for shorter periods in 1896 (CR1421-1434) and 1897 (CR1440-1471). But, many other artists also painted here, namely Albert Lebourg.
On this page you will first find so info on the trips of Monet. Then the various locations will be rendered from Dieppe in the north, then south-west to Pourville, then west-south to Varengeville. Note: additional info and pictures will be added.
Monet his extended trips to Pourville and surroundings: In 1882 Claude Monet spent a long time in Dieppe, Pourville and Varengeville, along the Normandy coast.
Monet started this period with a week in Dieppe (R22,CR706*) and then he stayed two months in Pourville (5km south-west) (R22,CR709). Monet depicted the cliffs and sea towards Dieppe, towards Le Petit Ailly (with the customs officers cottage; CR730) and more south to Varengeville (with the Gorge des Moutiers and the church Saint Valery; CR725). He also depicted the cook / manager of the casino hotel, his wife, their dog and the galettes they made (CR744-746), maybe the same location as where now is ‘Les Régates’ (iR9).
Mid-June he returned to Pourville with his family and stayed at the villa Juliette (R22,CR751). Monet again painted also in the surroundings and did so till early October.
In 1882 Monet painted about 100 works in Dieppe, Pourville and Varengeville: CR706-746 + 751-808 (iR3+iR182). Claude Monet again stayed in Pourville from mid-Februar 1896 until early April. Monet depicted the cliffs and the sea and the surroundings (towards the South-West) like Varengeville, the Mordal cleft, the Gorge du Petit Ailly, the Pointe de l’Ailly (near Vastérival)**. And also the surroundings towards Dieppe (in the North-East). (R22,CR1421)
Monet would return in 1897. He then also depicted the former coastguard house at Petit Ailly (CR1448-1458).
Many of these paintings were exhibited at the Georges Petit gallery in 1898 (R22IV,p1018). Note*: I will often refer to the catalogue raisonné (=CR) of Wildenstein (1996 =R22). Note**: Maybe now the lighthouse Phare d’Ailly (iR9).
