Claude Monet: 1885, SDbl, CR1035, Étratat, the Manneport at high tide, 65x81cm, private collection (iR2;R22,no1035) Provenance: 1885/12? Durand-Ruel (till 1905ca). Expos: New York-AAG+NAD-1886-123; New York-AAG-1886/87-6; =? GP1889-70; Boston-1905-92.
Introduction: Étretat lies 24km north of Le Havre. Courbet made several paintings here. Compared to Monet his colours are brighter around the years 1868/69 (both depicting the Falaise d’Aval). It’s impressive to see how Monet developed through the years and how his 1885↑ painting with it’s bright colours and it’s vivid brushstroke has become one of the greatest masterpieces of impressionist painting.
Monet painted often in Étretat*. In the winter of 1868/69 (R22,CR127+133+?CR258). 1883/01/31 he stayed here 3 weeks and made at least 18 paintings here (R22,CR816-833). August 1884 Monet made due to bad weather just two paintings (R22,CR907+908). In 1885 he stayed here from late September till mid-December; he returned for a short while during the second half of February 1886. Some of the works he finished later in his studio. (R22,no1009). He than made at least 41 paintings (R22,no1009-1053).
On the pictures we can namely discern (going from south-west to north-east) the Manneport; the Falaise d’Aval** with the Port d’Aval and the L’Aiguille (the Rock Needle), south-west of Étretat; the beach of Étretat; the Falaise d’Amont** with on the cliff the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde chapel, north-west of Étretat. Note: L’Oeuil du Panda, a cliff more south-west, is hardly depicted. Note**: Probably in the 1860s Monet came more often in Etretat, while dwelling in Le Havre and/or Sainte-Adresse. Probably in 1864 (R22,CR22a+b). It is unsure if he came here in 1873 (R22,CR258;M32). Note*: Amont means upstream and Aval downstream.
