overview expositions

Where and when did Monet show his paintings?
On this page you will find an overview of when and where Claude Monet showed his paintings. We will start with the works he showed at regional exhibitions, the Salon and the ‘impressionist’ expositions. At most of the later expositions Monet didn’t send in works himself, but it was the art-dealer Durand-Ruel who showed the many paintings he had bought from Monet. Also other art-dealers like Georges Petit and Bernheim-Jeune send in works to expositions and also paintings from private collections were send in. After 1881 Monet himself didn’t show much paintings.
On this page you will find an overview. Sometimes you are referred to seperate pages with more info and pictures. Enjoy!

At regionale exhibitions 1858-1873:
Monet submitted some paintings to regional exhibitions between 1858-73 (see seperate pages). Namely in Le Havre (1858 +1868), Rouen (1864 +1872), Bordeaux (1868), Dieppe (1873), Reims (1873).

At the Salon 1865-73:
In the period 1865-70 there were 5 paintings shown at the Salon and 7 were rejected. Some of these (rejected) works he showed at regional exhibitions or at art-dealers. Monet did not submit in 1872 and 1873. See seperate page.

At art-dealers:
Anyway in 1867 Monet showed two of his paintings (rejected at the Salon) at (small) art-dealers, namely at the art-supply shop of Louis Latouche and his wife and at the gallery of Hagerman.

In London 1870-75:
At the end of 1870 Monet met the art-dealer Durand-Ruel in London, who started to buy several of his paintings and showed some in his German gallery in London from 1870-75 (see seperate page). It is unclear if Monet also directly submitted to these expositions of the Society of French Artists.

International expositions 1871-1880:
Durand-Ruel submitted some of Monet his paintings to international expositions. In 1871 in South-Kensington (see), in 1873 in Vienna (maybe for the Exposition Universelle). Denvir mentions that in September 1880 there was an exhibition in Oran, Alger and Durand-Ruel send in 233 (most impressionist) paintings (R5,p118). It is not affirmed by Wildenstein that works of Monet were shown (R22IV,p1016). Sure is that some paintings of Pissarro were shown (R116I,p362).

The first 4 ‘impressionist’ expositions 1874-1879:
Claude Monet joined in the first 4 ‘impressionist’ expositions in 1874 +1876 +1877 +1879 (see seperate pages). He had been active in 1874 and 1877, but in 1879 he didn’t even show up and left the hanging to Caillebotte. Partly it was a retrospective showing several older paintings.

Auction sale at Hôtel Drouot in 1875 +1876:
The 1st ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1874 organised by the ‘Société anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, etc.‘ was no financial success and the Société was liquidated. In 1875 Renoir, Monet, Morisot and Sisley tried their luck by organising an auction sale of their works at Hôtel Drouot (see 1875). Monet showed 20 paintings (no.1-20). The sales were poor.
Monet didn’t join the group auction sale in 1877. But 1876/04/14 there was a sale of ‘M.’, according to Wildenstein being Monet, but the participation of Monet in this auction needs more investigation (see account). Works sold were: CR387 (= 2IE-1876-153; M22), CR388 or 389 (=2IE-1876-150) and ?CR390 (iR6; M25). La Japonaise was sold for the large amount of 2.020fr to M.L. (R22,CR387; R22I,p119).

La Vie Moderne 1880:
In June 1880 Monet could show about 16 paintings at the gallery of the editorial offices of the illustrated weekly magazine La Vie Moderne (see seperate page).

Return at the Salon 1880:
Following Renoir, Monet tried again to his luck by submitting to the Salon again; now organised by the Société des Artistes Français. One work was excepted, the other rejected. Monet stopped submitting to the Salon afterwards.

The 7th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1882:
