Expositions of the

Société Nouvelle

de Peintres et de Sculpteurs

Introduction:
From 1900 till 1922 the Société Nouvelle de Peintres et de Sculpteurs organised yearly independant group exhibitions. The expositions mostly were held in March, the were held at the Georges Petit Gallery and lasted about 3 weeks. Due to World War I there were no expositions in 1915 and 1916. At the end of 1911 and the beginning of 1912 there was an exhibition tour in the USA. In December and Januar at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo. In February and March at the Art Institute in Chicago. In March and April at the museum of Fine Art in Boston. (R297,p347).
Most of the partakers came forth of Symbolism, shared a Romantic vision. On the one hand they tried to render a faithful representation of nature and people, but also they wanted to render an elusive suggestion of something deeper, a tragedy or a mystery. So, on one hand they were more or less influenced by an impressionist painting style and on the other hand they stood in a symbolist tradition. (R297,p9+10).
Of the partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions only Jean-François Raffaëlli joined from 1911-1922 and Monet only in 1908.
