Expos 1874-86: fans

The ‘impressionist’ expositions

1874 – 1886

Exhibited fans

An overview

Introduction:
At the ‘impressionist’ expositions there were also fans exhibited, but only in 1879 + 1880 + 1886 and only by a limited amount of partakers. In total there were about 35 fans exhibited by Degas, Forain, Morisot, Pissarro, Redon and Zandomeneghi. Note: If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!

Clarification:
In 1879 Degas showed 5, Forain 4 and Pissarro 12 (I will render 15 pictures). In 1880 Morisot rendered 1 fan, Pissarro also 1 and Zandomeneghi 4 (I render just 2 pictures to compare). In 1886 Morisot exhibited ‘éventails’, I assume it were 6 fans. Pissarro showed 1 fan and probably Redon also, but outside the catalogue (I couldn’t find a picture). So at 3 expositions there were probably 35 fans exhibited, which is a small 2% of all the art-works exhibited.
On this page I will render 35 pictures of fans. For some fans I have no suggestion. Of several fans the suggestion is uncertain and the quality poor. Sometimes I render another fan to compare. Sometimes I render more than one option for 1 catalogue number. See also the accounts of Degas, Forain, Morisot, Pissarro, Redon and Zandomeneghi.

My main sources are the catalogues of the 8 ‘impressionist’ expositions as rendered by Moffett (1986=R2), Berson (1996=R90I) and the Salon database (iR1). See the link for other general References (=Rx) and to the internet references (=iRx).
