Artist name of Charles-Auguste-Émile Durand, born in Lille. He died in Paris.
Made many portraits of the high society, but also of other artists like Monet in 1867.
He attended the Académie Suisse from 1859-61, probably meeting several ‘impressionists’.
He was befriended with Monet and Manet. At first he was influenced by Courbet.
He made his debut at the Salon in 1859, received medals in 1866 +69 +70 and a medal of honnour in 1879.
In 1867 he became member of the ‘Société Japonaise du Jinglar’ of which Félix Bracquemond and Fantin-Latour↓ also were a members.
He was appointed in the Légion d’Honneur as Chevalier in 1872, as Officier in 1878, as Commandeur in 1889 and as Grand Officier in 1900.
At the Exposition Universelle in 1878 he was present with 10 paintings and received a 2nd class medal. In 1889 he exhibited at the ‘oeuvres d’art’ 10 works and at the ‘Centennale‘ 2 works; he exhibited hors concours. In 1900 he was part of the jury and also exhibited hors concours; at the decennial exhibition he showed 8 paintings; and at the Centennale 3 paintings.
In 1890 he was co-founder of the Sociéte National des Beaux-Arts. In 1900 he was président de la Société des Beaux-Arts (R337).
In 1904 he became member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. From 1905-14 he was director of (?) the École des Beaux-Arts.
