Berck

(along the English Channel)

Introduction:
Berck(-sur-Mer) lies 150km north/east of Le Havre in the Hauts-de-France region (iR9). Berck has the Musée de France d’Opal sud (M202), showing several works from the ‘École de Berck’, also called the ‘École des peintres de la Côte d’Opale’ (M202; iR4). This school was initiated by Ludovic LépicFrancis Tattegrain (1852–1915), his pupil, also was an important member (iR3).

The following partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions did paint here: Boudin, Latouche, Lebourg, Renoir and Sisley.
The following para-impressionists did paint here: Besnard, Marie Cazin, Jules Le Coeur and Manet.

Ludovic Lépic painted here very often. From 1875ca-1883ca* Lepic stayed here 6 months a year in Berck*, where he painted many beaches and marines (aR4). In 1877 the ‘School of Berck’ was born with the activities of Lepic in Berck (M202;aR4). At the 2nd ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1876 Lepic showed 3 paintings explicitly made in Berck (no.105 +106 +112). At the Salon he did so to in 1879 (no.1898 +1899), in 1881 (no.1425 +1426), in 1883 (no.1492) and in 1887 (no.1490); see also the overview and the account.
Note*: Maybe a work exhibited in 1874 was made in Berck (1IE-1874-77); in 1887 Lepic showed at the Salon a work made in Berck (SdAF-1887-1490).

WikiPedia claims the Auguste Renoir also painted in Berck (iR4). But the Catalogue Raisonné of Dauberville doesn’t confirm this (R185). His friend Jules le Coeur and his family had a home in Berck (R430,p19+28). August 1866 Renoir stayed here with Charles and Marie Le Coeur and also with Alfred Sisley (R31,p295). But, there are no works known of Sisley that are made in Berck either (R396).
Edouard Manet and Albert Lebourg both painted in Berck in 1873, maybe they did more often. Manet stayed in the summer of 1873 three weeks in Berck (R494,p344)and he painted here more works (see R71,no167-180): the swallows (M85; R71,no169); Le bateau noir à Berck (iR6; R71,no174); Plage de Berck-sur-merà marée basse (iR6; R71,no178); Marine à Berck: Bateaux de pêche et pêcheurs (see; R71-/-); fishing boats at Berck (iR387; R213,no152; R71,no173); Boats at Berck-sur-Mer (iR4; iR155; iR42; R71,no175). 1875/09/19 he adviced Stéphane Mallarmé to ‘make a trip to Berck’ (R213,p175).
Louis Latouche showed at the in 1874 a work called ‘La plage, marée basse à Berck (Pas-de-Calais)’ (no.69). See link for some uncertain suggestions I render.
Eugène Boudin painted in Berck at least in 1877 + 1890.

Here below you will find some of the pictures the mentioned artists painted in Berck. I will render them by form and thematical. At the end I will render some pictures that can be seen in the Musée de France d’Opal sud (M202); some of these works maybe also were made in Berck.
