1869

The Salon of 1869, short info:
The Salon of 1869 (the 87th) lasted from 1th of May till the 20th of June and took place in the Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris (iR4;iR3). The catalogue mentions 3223 partakers and 4273 numbers (iR1).
The Médaille d’Honneur was awarded to Léon Bonnat↑. His paintings can be seen as the standard of art. There were 3 artists appointed as Officier in the Légion d’Honneur, namely Baudry↓, Edouard Dubufe and Eugéne Fromentin↓.

23 of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions showed about 50 art-works at the Salon of 1869. Exhibited art-works by other artists:
Here below you will find some art-works (mainly paintings) of some other artists that were exhibited at the Salon of 1869. You will find them by form and in an alphabetical order. This will not give you an overall impression (that is outside the scope of this website). Namely works of pre-impressionist, para-impressionist and other related artitsts will be shown. Namely the following artists showed paintings: Bazille; Bouguereau; Carolus-Duran; Corot; Jongkind; Manet;

Rejected art-works:
Works of several artists were rejected for the Salon of 1869. This included works of Mary Cassatt; Degas; Monet (2x); Sisley (1x).

 

Background information:
The art-works were divided in 7 sections:
1. painting; 2. drawings +watercolours +pastels +miniatures +enamels +porcelain +(cartons for) stained glass windows; 3. sculpture; 4. engravings on medals and gemstones; 5. architecture; 6. engravings; 7. lithographs.
Per sections artists could send in 2 art-works.
In an appendix the paintings and sculptures executed since 1868 in public monuments were noted.

There were 164.344 paying visitors and 207.319 visitors during the 7 free sundays. The catalogue mentions 4.230 art-works, including 256 entries of foreign artists. It consisted of 2.452 paintings, 758 drawings, 581 sculptures, 291 engravings, 54 lithographs, 93 architecture projects.
The art-works acquired by the State were published in the Chronique politique des arts, 1869/08/01 + 08.

The jury:
There were 4 juries. One for section 1+2; one for 3+4; one for 5; one for 6+7. The overall president was Comte de Nieuwerkerke.  1869/03/22 the admission and award jury was elected. In the painting section (+ drawing etc.) the following painters were elected (in order of the most votes): Gérôme*, Baudry**, Pils*, Bonnat**, Bida, Gleyre, Fromentin, Comte, Breton**, Daubigny, Robert-Fleury* (president), Cabanel*; and as reserve Philippe Rousseau, Cabat*,  Brion, J.F. Millet, Français** and Corot. There were 6 additional non-artists part of the jury, in total 18 persons of which 4 were member of L’Institut.

The awards:
The awards were distributed 1869/08/13.
M. Duc received the Grand Prix de l’Empereur worth 100.000fr. This artist is unknown. His first names are not mentioned. He was not in the catalogue of 1869 (R337). He is not mentioned by Schurr & Cabanne (R9). A quick search on the internet, namely on the French WikiPedia site, doesn’t render an indication.
The Médaille d’Honneur was awarded to Léon Bonnat and (Jean-Joseph) Perraud (statuaire).
Léon Bonnat had shown a painting made for a chapel and as public monument ceilings of the Palais de Justice:

40 artists received a medal for the section painting and drawings, etc., including Detaille, Carolus-Duran, Harpignies, J.P. Laurens, Gustave Moreau and Vollon.
The 2 Médailles d’Honneur had a value of 4.000fr each; the other medals 400fr.

Légion d’Honneur:
There were 3 artists appointed as Officier in the Légion d’Honneur, namely Baudry, (Edouard) Dubufe and Eugéne Fromentin; 7 artists were appointed as Chevalier.
Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry (1828-86):

He would become member of L’Institut in 1870.
Édouard Dubufe (1819-83) (iR3):
