Pre-Impressionism:
Antoine Chintreuil
1814 – 1873
General info:
Antoine Chintreuil was born in Pont-de-Vaux in the department of the Ain (M1;aR3).
In 1842 Chintreuil studied at the studio of Delaroche.
In 1843 he met Corot, who is called his teacher in the Salon catalogues (iR1).
From 1850 till 1857 he lived in Igny .
He frequently painted in the surroundings of Barbizon. Still, some sources don’t include him to the Barbizon painters (R290,p10).
In 1861 he made studies of the sea and the changing tones of the sky in Fécamp at the Normandy coast (M61).
In 1873/08/08 he died in La Tournelle-Septeuil, in the Seine-et-Oise district, where he had been living since 1857 (aR2,V1,p122;iR3;M61).
Chintreuil was a pre-impressionist, he often rendered the influence of weather (rain and brume), the seasons and the time of day (namely twilight). His brushstroke stays more smooth. His work is characterised by a dramatic treatment of the atmosphere and the light (M1). His colours are quite bright.
Chintreuil at the Salon:
Chintreuil started to exhibit at the Salon in 1848 (or earlier).
In 1863 he was refused and exhibited at the Salon des Refusés.
In 1867 he received a medal.
From 1868-70 he exhibited ‘exempté’.
In 1870 and 1872 he was member of the jury and exhibited ‘hors concours’ (R59,p184; see).
In 1870 he was appointed Chevalier in the Légion d’Honneur (R337/1873).
Almost all paintings were landscapes.

Works of Chintreuil were exhibited at the Expositions Universelle, also posthumously.
In 1855 he showed one painting (a countryside in the morning).
In 1867 he showed two landscapes, but later on at least one other landscape was added (outside the catalogue =hc).
At the Universal Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 Chintreuil received a medal.
In 1878 posthumously two landscapes were shown, both loans from the Musée de Luxembourg.
In 1889 at the Exposition Centennale four landscapes were shown, all (private) loans.
In 1900 at the Exposition Centennale five landscapes were shown, all private loans.
