Impressionism, a historical reconstruction:

Alfred Sisley

(1839-1899)

painting series

Introduction:
First of all Impressionism is a painting style. The Impressionists tried to catch the effect of atmospherical influences (like time of day, seasons and weather conditions) on the colours of the objects. To establish this, the artist painted en-plein-air and in a sketchy way.
A specific form of this painting style is the rendering of series. In a serie the Impressionist artist repeatingly renders a same object. But, not this object is the theme of the painting, but the influence of atmospherical influences on the colours of this object. Alfred Sisley did so, with a serie of the L’Abreuvoir in Marly-le-Roi and of the bridge and the church of Moret-sur-Loing. You can also discern some smaller series he made.

L’Abreuvoir de Marly:
In 1875 and 1876 Alfred Sisley often depicted the watering place (=L’Abreuvoir) opposite of where he lived in Marly-le-Roi. He did so within several weather conditions.
See also CCPP 179 +180 +181 +182 +201 +202 +253 +256 (R396).

Series of the bridge at Moret-sur-Loing:
From 1887 till 1893 Alfred Sisley painted many times the bridge at Moret-sur-Loing. Partly from different viewpoints, partly from (almost) the same viewpoint. In his pictures he tries to catch the influence of atmospherical conditions on the colours of the bridge and buildings. These atmospherical conditions are just partly rendered in the titles of the paintings. Most paintings were not exhibited.
It’s nice to compare this serie with Monet’s series of the London bridges.

Serie of the church of Moret-sur-Loing:
In 1893 and 1894 Alfred Sisley made a serie* of the church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité in Moret-sur-Loing (see) at the Rue de l’Eglise (iR9). November 1889 Sisley had moved to 19, Rue Montmartre, Moret-sur-Loing, which is very closeby. Special about this serie was that he mostly choose the same viewpoint. Sisley rendered the influence of atmospherical conditions (like time of day, seasons and weather conditions) on the colours** of the church.
It’s nice to compare this serie with the serie Claude Monet made in 1892-94 of the Rouen Cathedral.
Note*: there are 12 pictures rendered in the Catalogue Raisonné of Daulte (1959=R129=CR818-822 + 834-840) and 13 in the Catalogue Critique des Peintures et des Pastels (2021=R396=CCPP928-940).
Note**: the colours on the reproduced pictures are disputable, so a full comparison is not possible.

Sisley painted several smaller series:
During his life Alfred Sisley often painted a same theme or object several times. Mostly from (slightly) different viewpoints.

In 1872 and 1876 Sisley painted the floodings in Port-Marly. But the atmospherical conditions don’t seem to be central and are not indicated in the title.
See also CCPP 52 +229 +230 +231 +232 (R396).

From around 1872 till 1876 Sisley often depicted the Machine de Marly from several viewpoints. This was more a variation on the same theme, than a serie. See CCPP 45 +65 +66 +67 +163 +214 (R396).

In 1877 Sisley painted at least 8 times the bridge in Sèvres. But the atmospherical conditions don’t seem to be central. See CCPP 275-282 (R396).

Note: pictures will be added later.

From 1881 till 1897 Sisley repeatedly painted several views of the riverside of the Loing (Canal).

From around 1881 till around 1892 Sisley sometimes depicted the boatyard of Matrat with in the distance Moret-sur-Loing. Also explicitly depicting atmospherical conditions. See CCPP 448 +449 +498 +866 +867 +906 +907 (R396).

In 1896 + 1897 Sisley made a small serie depicting the bend in the Loing (sometimes including cabins). Also explicitly depicting atmospherical conditions. See CCPP 961 +963-966 +968-970 +973-983 +987-989 (R396).

In 1897 Sisley painted small series of the cliffs of Penarth and Lady’s Cove in Wales. Also explicitly depicting atmospherical conditions. See CCPP 992-1013 (R396).
