Impressionism, locations
where the ‘impressionists’ did paint:
Saint-Mammès
a topographical overview
Introduction:
Alfred Sisley made many landscapes and riverviews in Saint-Mammès. He lived at the other side of the Loing canal in Veneux-les-Sablons and in Moret-sur-Loing. He also depicted the north part along the Seine, including the hills of La Celle-sur-Seine.
Along the Seine:
East and north of Saint-Mammès flows the Seine, which makes a bend. At the other (northern) bank the hills of La Celle-sur-Seine are visible.
View on Saint-Mammès along the Seine:
Alfred Sisley depicted Saint-Mammès seen from the opposite bank of the Seine* at La Celle-sur-Seine (R166,p182; R396,CCPP480+481+483).
Note*: the Critical Catalogue suggests the Loing (canal) was depicted (=CCPP=R396), but I assume the detailed geographical reconstruction by Sylvie Patin is more accurate (R166,p182).
The confluence of the Seine and the Loing canal:
North-west of Saint-Mammès lies the confluence of the Seine and the Loing canal. From here the Seine flows (with a bend) to the north-west. With Veneux-les-Sablons and Thomery to the west and Champagne-sur-Seine to the east. The Loing canal comes from the south-east direction, with Veneux-les-Sablons and Moret-sur-Loing to the west.
Along the banks of the Seine or the Loing Canal:
Sometimes it is not clear which riverbank Alfred Sisley depicted.
Maybe it will be more clear after additional study.
Saint-Mammès along the Loing Canal:
Alfred Sisley also depicted Saint-Mammès along the Loing canal (R166,no56+57+58; R396,CCPP673+668+775).
Note: the Loing Canal was the semi-canalised end of the river Loing, partly flowing parallel, before it flows into the Seine (R166,p206;iR3).
Note: pictures will be added later.
The village of Saint-Mammès:
Alfred Sisley mostly depicted Saint-Mammès along the Loing canal and along the Seine. Sometimes he also depicted the village.
Sources:
My main sources are catalogues on Alfred Sisley: the Catalogue Raisonné by Daulte (=CR) (1959=R129); the Catalogue Critique des Peintures et des pastels by Brame & Lorenceau (=CCPP) (2021=R396); exhibition catalogue by Stevens (1992=R166), namely the topographical reconstruction of Sylvie Patin (R166,p182).
