of the

8th ‘impressionist’ exposition 1886

What pictures were shown at the 8th ‘impressionist’ exposition?
In 1886 the ‘8me exposition de peinture‘ was held in Paris. This exposition is now mostly called the 8th ‘impressionist’ exposition. There were 18 partakers. The catalogue rendered the numbers 1-246, but in reality there were about 301 art-works exhibited. On this page you find 292 pictures representing suggestions for 294 art-works. See the accounts of the partakers and the clarification at the bottom of this page. If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!

Clarification:
On this page you find 292 pictures representing suggestions for 294 art-works of the about 301 art-works that were exhibited at the 8th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1886. Catalogue number 233 was left out. The following works maybe were not exhibited: nos. 17+18+20+27+28 (of Degas), but because of the uncertainty I still will render them.
No. 210 of Tillot showed two studies of anemones, but I render 1 frame (containing two pictures of anemones).
No. 217 of Tillot probably contained two drawings, but I render 1 frame (containing two drawings).
Ruth Berson renders 134 small black and white pictures of the works that are quite certainly exhibited (1996=R90II,p257-279).
You will find (most of) these suggestions (when possible) in larger coloured pictures.
The suggestions I add are mostly less certain*.

I also render works to compare. Works of the artist itself that has some similarity with the work exhibited, but are certainly not exhibited, because the title doesn’t fully fit, the description in the reviews doesn’t fit and/or the date doesn’t fit.
Sometimes to compare I render a compilation of 2 or 3 pictures. When possible with one of the artist itself and added with pictures of other artists. Pictures that fit more with the title in the catalogue and (when possible) has similarities with the painting style of the artist. But, sometimes I just render to compare a photo. Anyway, in these ways I hope te render any impression of the work exhibited.

Sometimes I render a compilation of 2 or 3 pictures (that give a good impression): nos. 203 +204 +205 +206 +207 +209 +211 +216 (of Tillot).
The following (compilations of) pictures I render to compare are quite weak: no. 67 of Guillaumin; nos. 139 + 141 +143 +144 +145 +146 +147 +148 +150 +151 +152 +155 +156 +157 +159 +160 +163 +164 +165 (of Rouart); no.200 of Signac; nos. 202 +208 +212 +214 (of Tillot); no.221 of Vignon.
For the following numbers I only render (namely) pictures of other artists to compare: nos. 210 (=2x) +213 +217 (=2x) (of Tillot); and the at least 2 works that Comtesse de Rambure exhibited outside the catalogue (=hc).

Helas, of several options I could only find a picture in black and white, namely no.52 of Gauguin; no.70 of Guillaumin; nos. 93-1 +94-2 +94-3 +94-4 of Morisot; no. 97 of Camille Pissarro; nos. 116-1/2/3/4/5/7/8/9/10/11 of Lucien Pissarro; no.166 of Schuffenecker; no.187+194 of Signac; no.228 of Vignon; no.236+244 of Zandomeneghi.

Sometimes (6x) I have no suggestion at all, namely for the numbers 5 (of Marie Bracquemond), 81 (of Guillaumin), 115+121 (Lucien Pissarro), hc (of Redon); no.238 (of Zandomeneghi).

See the accounts of the partakers. See link for an explanation of the subscriptions.

Note*: the given suggestions vary from certain (=!), to almost certain (=?!), to uncertain (=?), to very uncertain (=??), to most uncertain (=???).
