Meta-Impressionism
Légion d’Honneur
a sign of recognition
Légion d’Honneur:
An important award that an artist could receive was to be appointed in the Légion d’Honneur. More than once this was because of achievements at the Salon or at the Exposition Universelle. This can be seen as a broader sign of recognition.
First an artist was appointed Chevalier (knight), than Officier, than Commandeur, than Grand Officier and at last, one could receive the ‘Grande Croix’ (iR5;iR1;R231). You can see the appointed artists as the (ultimate) official standerd of art.
On this website I focus on the artists that were appointed in the period 1855 – 1900. I will also render pictures that were (probably) related to being appointed in the Légion d’Honneur.
See a seperate page for an overview of the appointments per year.
Some partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions also were appointed in the Légion d’Honneur.
Many artists were appointed Chevalier. It goes to far to render their names.
The following partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions were appointed only as Chevalier before 1900: Astruc, Boudin, Desboutin, Auguste Ottin.
The following partakers after 1900: Cassatt, Guillaumin, Redon, Schuffenecker.
Those who were appointed Officier you will find on the page highly awarded artists.
Félix Bracquemond was appointed as Officier in 1889.
The following partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions after 1900: Colin, Frank Lamy, Lebourg, J.F. Rafaëlli.
The limited amount of artists who were appointed Commandeur or even Grand Officier you will find on the page most highly awarded artists.
The following partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions were appointed Commandeur after 1900: Renoir (1912), Forain (1928), Signac (1933).
