Jean-Baptiste Millet pictures

Impressionism, a historical reconstruction:

Jean-Baptiste Millet

(1830-1906)

An overview of his pictures

namely drawings and aquarelles

Introduction:
On this page you will find an overview of 144 pictures I could find of Jean-Baptiste Millet, mostly drawings and watercolours. I will render them thematically and by form. I also try to link these pictures to works Millet did exhibit at the 2nd ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1876, at the Salon and at the Hôtel Drouot sales. Most suggestions are just to compare. See link for an account. See link for an explanation of the subscription. For the sources see at the bottom of the mainpage about Jean-Baptiste Millet. Note: If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. Enjoy!

Locations:
Jean-Baptiste Millet regularly added locations to the titles of his pictures. Pictures that are known nowadays just sometimes render locations in the title (I hope this is accounted for).
Millet namely noted Barbizon and it’s surroundings: Chailly-en-Bière (just north), Fleury-en-Bière (just west), Cély (just west of Fleury), Saint-Martin-en-Bière (just south; including Macherin), Fontainebleau (to the east-south) and the forest of Fontainebleau (just east). Jean-Baptiste Millet lived in Barbizon with his elder brother Jean-François (aR5;aR6). After the death of Jean-François in 1875, Jean-Baptiste began to wander around (aR6). In a letter it is noted that Jean-Baptiste flew from Paris to Barbizon in 1870/11 (iR40/bpt6k96868782 =R349III,p64). So, I assume most of his works made in and around Barbizon were made between 1870 and 1875. This seems to be affirmed by the fact that many of the works exhibited in these years carry these locations (except SdAF-1880-5409).
Not exhibited, but noted in present titles are Gruchy and nearby Gréville, now both part of Gréville-Hague (iR3) in the Manche region. Gruchy lies near the English Channel. Several of the works of Jean-Baptiste Millet depict a sea-view. I assume these were made near Gruchy. I will render these works here below.

Shepherd(ess) with sheep, cows and other animals:
Jean-Baptiste very often depicted herds with or without their shepherds, mosthly of sheep and cows, but also of poultry. Some of these works are made near the sea, which probably was near to his parental house in Gruchy (Gréville; la Manche), these you will find above. He also made some studies of animals. Just one of these works is known te have been exhibited:

2IE-1876-138, Femme gardant les vaches (aquarelle)

Country views with farms / hamlets:
Jean-Baptiste Millet depicted many farms / hamlets / villages. Some depicted Gruchy, which you will find above. Many of these themes Millet exhibited in 1876 (2IE-1876), at the Salon (=S) or were sold at Hôtel Drouot (=HD).
