5th ‘impressionist’ exposition

1880

What pictures were exhibited at the 5th ‘impressionist’ exposition?
In 1880 the ‘5me exposition de peinture‘ was held in Paris. This exposition is now mostly called the 5th ‘impressionist’ exposition. There were 16 partakers. The catalogue rendered the numbers 1-232, but in reality there were much more art-works exhibibited, namely about 309. On this page you will find an accounted impression of these exhibited art-works, I render 294 pictures, representing 300 exhibited art-works. See the accounts of the partakers and the clarification at the bottom of this page. If you double click on the first picture and then click on full screen, you can create a slideshow. On a smartphone or laptop you can also zoom in. Enjoy!

Clarification:
On this page you find 294 suggestions for the about 309 art-works that were exhibited at the 5th ‘impressionist’ exposition in 1880.
At least 2 works of Degas (probably) were not exhibited (catalogue no.33+34).
Probably no.8 of Caillebotte wasn’t exhibited, instead he exhibited a portrait outside the catalogue (=hc).
No. 204 +205 probably contained 4 pictures (studies) within one frame, but I count them both as 4 works that were exhibited; but for both I render 4 pictures within one frame, so just 2 pictures instead of 6.

Ruth Berson renders 98 small black and white pictures of the works that are quite certainly exhibited (1996=R90II,p159-175).
You will find (most of) these suggestions (when possible) in larger coloured pictures.
The suggestions I add are mostly less certain*.

I also render works to compare. Works of the artist itself that has some similarity with the work exhibited, but are certainly not exhibited, because the title doesn’t fully fit, the description in the reviews doesn’t fit and/or the date doesn’t fit.
Sometimes to compare I render a compilation of 2 or 3 pictures. When possible with one of the artist itself and added with pictures of other artists. Pictures that fit more with the title in the catalogue and (when possible) has similarities with the painting style of the artist. But, sometimes I just render to compare a photo. Anyway, in these ways I hope te render any impression of the work exhibited.

Sometimes I render a compilation of 2 or 3 pictures (that give a good impression): 193 +195 +199 +200 +202 (Tillot);
The following suggestion given to compare are very weak: no.71 of Guillaumin, no.105 +109 +110 +111 (Levert); no.160 of J.F. Raffaëlli; 184 +191 +192 (Rouart); 194 +196 +201 +203 (Tillot).
For the following numbers I only render pictures of other artists to compare: 198 +204(1-4) +205(1-4) +206 (Tillot);

Helas, of several options I could only find a picture in black and white, namely no.16 of Caillebotte; no.46 of Forain; no.80 of Guillaumin; no.92 of Lebourg; nos. 105 +110 of Levert; no.117 of Morisot; nos. 144 +162 +177 +hc2 +hc3 of J.F. Raffaëlli; 191 + 192 (Rouart); no.213 of Vidal; no.226+230 of Zandomeneghi.

Sometimes (9x) I have no suggestion at all, namely for no. 158 + 167-1 + 169 (Jean-François Raffaëlli); 208 + 209 + 215 (Vidal); 227 + 231 + 232 (Zandomeneghi).

See the accounts of the partakers. See link for an explanation of the subscriptions.

Note*: the given suggestions vary from certain (=!), to almost certain (=?!), to uncertain (=?), to very uncertain (=??), to most uncertain (=???).
