1900

The Salon SdAF of 1900, short info:
The Salon (de la Société des Artistes Français) of 1900 (the 118th) was held from the 7th of April till the 7th of June at the Place de Breteuil (R337/1900,pCXVII). It was held alongside the Exposition Universelle of 1900. On this page you will find short information and some of the pictures. First you will find highly awarded paintings, that can be seen as the standard of art. Then you will find art-works of the just 3 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions that joined. Then some pictures of some related artists. Then references to some other exhibited works. At last you will find some additional information.
Enjoy!

Highly awarded art-works:
The following artists were (highly) rewarded at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (=SdAF) of 1900 (R337/1901,pIX+) This can be seen as the standard of art in that year.

Achille Granchi-Taylor (1857-1921) (iR3) received the Prix Rosa Bonheur↓.
12 painters received a 2nd class medal, 31 artists a 3rd class medal and 44 an honorable mention. (note: There were no 1st class medal distributed.)
Some art-works exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (=SdAF) of 1900 were (assigned and) purchased by the State. Namely of Edouard Crémieux and Émile Wéry↑.

Exhibited art-works by the ‘impressionist’:
Just 3* of the 57 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions showed some art-works at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (=SdAF) of 1900.
Astruc: 1 aquarelle (no.1391, Rameau de clématites dans un vase); I couldn’t find a suggestion, see to compare pictures overview / flowers.
Franc Lamy: 1 painting (no.742, Soleil d’automne)↓;
Léon Ottin: 2 (designs for) stained windows in the section architecture (no.2316bis, Deux scènes du Vitrail retraçant la légende de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle; église de Saint-Nicolas, à Châtillon-sur-Seine)↓.
See also the accounts of these artists (in the left or bottom sub-menus).

Exhibited art-works by other French artists:
Here below you will find some art-works (mainly paintings) of some other artists that were exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (=SdAF) of  1900. Some were shown hors concours, because the artist was highly or repeatedly awarded before. You will find the pictures by form and in an alphabetical order.
Note: This will not give you an overall impression (that is outside the scope of this website).

Exhibited art-works by foreign artists:
Several foreign artists exhibited at at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (=SdAF) of 1900, namely Daniel Ridgway Knight (USA); Václav Radimský (Czech); Louis de Schryver (Belgium); Sorolla y Bastida (Spanish).

More art-works exhibited:
It is outside the scope of this website to render many pictures that were exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (=SdAF) of 1900. Here below you will find some more titles with external links to (black and white) pictures, mostly to WikiMedia (iR6) or a Museum (=M).
Note: I did a quick search for several works depicted in the ‘catalogue illustré’ (R332), the ‘planches de photogravures’ (R335) and for other relevant pictures. For in total about 100 works I couldn’t find any suggestion on the internet. So, many works exhibited in 1900 are now lost (in oblivion).

Rejected art-works:
Several art-works must have been rejected for the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français (=SdAF) of 1900. But, I don’t know of any that are relevant for this website. Maybe I will look into it later on.

Background info:
This same year (1900) there were also art exhibitions at the Exposition Universelle, namely a Decennial exhibition and a Centennial exhibition.
The catalogue of this Salon mentions 2714 partakers and 2885 numbers (iR1;iR4;iR3); these were very low numbers. But, mostly an artist had just 1 catalogue number in which he showed 1, 2 or 3 art-works. So, in reality the amount of exhibited art-works was (much) higher. The numbers in the catalogue are: paintings 1-1379; drawings etc. 1380-1805; scultpure 1806-2185; gravure en médailles et sur pierres fines 2186-2244; architecture 2245-2343; gravure et lithographie 2344-2719; art décoratif 2720-2872; monuments publics 3x.
Just 3 partakers of the ‘impressionist’ expositions did show art-works↑: Astruc; Franc Lamy; Léon Ottin.
The Academic painters that joined were: Benjamin-Constant; Bouguereau; Jules Breton; Henner; Jean-Paul Laurens; Jules-Joseph Lefebvre; Aimé Morot; Antoine Vollon.
Pre-impressionists that joined were namely: Henri Harpignies; Emile Jacque;
Para-impressionists that joined were namely: Jules Breton; Jean Desbrosses; Antoine Guillemet (compare); .
Neo-impressionists that joined were namely: Henri Martin;
Post-impressionists that joined were namely: Emile Friesz;
Meta-impressionists that joined were namely: Émile Breton; Jules Delaunay; Julien Dupré (see option); Francis Tattegrain;
Foreign artists↑: Daniel Ridgway Knight (USA); Václav Radimský (Czech); Louis de Schryver (Belgium); Sorolla y Bastida (Spanish);

There were for the years 1900-02 (for the painting section) 50 committee members appointed, including all the 14 members of L’Institut. Bonnat and Detaille were honorary presidents; Bouguereau was part of the ‘Bureau du Comité’  and president of the painting section, he also was president of the jury; Henner was vice-president of the jury. (R337/1900,pCXXX).
The Médaille d’Honneurs were distributed 21 April, the other awards the 4th of May.
